“Kaela, it can’t be that bad.” Tina sat on the foot of Kaela’s bed rubbing her back.

“No it’s worse…..” she hugged her German Shepherd that was stretched out on her bed. “he’s aweful, he’s a jerk and … just down right mean…” she shook with a sob.

“Did you really throw your drink on him?”

“No…” she sniffled. “I threw Collin’s drink on him and stormed out.”

“Water?”

“Red wine.”

Tina winced. “Nick came by earlier to see you.”

“I don’t want to see anybody, this is my senior year all over again.” She rolled over grabbing her tissue wiping her nose and the dog woofing softly turning to lick her tears. “PV stop.” She scolded half heartedly.

“We’re going out tonight Kaela, you need to stop moping about this. You knew it was over years ago when he never came back. Now it’s just confirmed.”

“Tina…”

“Go, get in the shower, you stink, you’ve got to get more ice cream anyway, and we’re going out on the town.”

“I don’t want to.”

“Makaela….”

“Fine….” She scratched her dog’s ears and got up. She yawned and stretched. She kicked off her slippers and dropped her robe heading to the bathroom. She melted in the shower just sobbing. Only this time she didn’t have her brother to hold her, or her Aunt to comfort her, and it was the same broken heart that seemed to refuse to heal. “Tina…” she called almost an hour later as she dripped out of the bathroom in her giant towel. “I don’t want to stay out too late, I need to write.”

“Good, Collins brought by a new laptop for you.”

“Really….” She smiled. “A new toy.” She grinned. “I’ll be out in a minute.” She called down the stairs and went into her room. She was in her jeans and a rather complamentary tight tee that wasn’t too immodest. She pulled a flannel shirt on over it and paused, it had been his… didn’t matter, she told herself, her father had paid for it, it was hers. She piled her hair on top of her head after blow drying and curling it and pinned it up with some hair stix. A few locks hung down as she did her make up and she went to her jewelry box. The empty space from where the ring had sat for so long, he’d wanted her to wear it from the day he left… and had worn it until the day he’d told her to take it off. Blinking away the sadness she put on her locket from her great grandmother.

“Kaela … ready?” Tina asked standing in the door.

“yeah, you?”

“Yeah, I’m ready, PV’s in his kennel and the cat is fed.”

“Thanks.” She finished tying her shoe. “My purse is by the door and the car should have been delivered by Collins yesterday.”

“Yes, all’s ready.” Tina hesitated.

“What’s wrong?”

“He came to visit.”

“he? He who?”

“Val.” She looked at her feet. “he’s in the living room.”

Kaela froze and tossed the keys to her. “Go start the car, I’ll meet you out there.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

“Don’t hurt him.”
