Media coverage for the ‘blind date’ was set to a minimum and there were only a few photographers at the restaurant when Makaela exited her car. She let out a grateful breath, she hated blind dates, she always felt so vulnerable.
“Kaela, your date arrived a few moments ago, he’s in the restroom now, lets get to the table.” Collins her Agent met her at the door.
“Is he cute?” She asked casually pretending to be interested.
“Very.” Collins looked at her. “or so I’m told.” He winked. “You’ll be fine, trust me.”
“Okay, cause right now that’s all I’m doing, I wasn’t even involved with the use of me as a prize for the radio.”
“It was a criteria.”
“I’m sure Fox meant you to set him up with me not caller number 10.”
“He was vague on the details.”
“Makaela.” An all too familiar voice spoke behind her as Collins had just shown her to the table.
She stiffened.
“Alan.” She turned to face him. “I must say I’m more than a little surprised.”
“No more than I.”
“I ah… see that this date isn’t as blind as expected?” Collins cleared his throat not liking the daggers that were being shot back and forth between them.
“No, it’s not, but it’ll be okay.” Kaela cleared her throat. “Goodbye Collins.”
It took the other man a moment to realize that she was waiting for him to go to a different table and leave them alone, but it finally sank in.
“How’s Vanessa?”
“Fine.” He said coldly. “Nick?”
“Fine.” She shrugged. “How’s Grandfather?”
“Fine.” He unwrapped his napkin from his silverware. “Aunt Loui?”
“Good.” She stared at her water glass. “Why did you come?”
“Free food.” He stared at her as she avoided his gaze. She’d hardly changed at all. A bit taller, maybe a bit thinner, definitely a lot… sadder. He pushed the last thought out of his head. IT didn’t matter.
“That was different. And I don’t appreciate you pulling me into your fantasy world.”
Kaela paused. “I never realized I was pulling you into my fantasy world. You seemed more than willing to be part when we were kids. And I changed names in my books so nobody knows the difference unless they were involved.”
