Unknown’s P.O.V.

“Milord, the fog is rolling in!” I heard one of the soldiers yell to me.

“I can see that! Fortify the wall and double the guards. Make sure our forces are prepared for whatever is about to come.” I barked my orders to the soldier who scrambled off. I stared out at the horizon as the light gray clouds began to fill in the bay.

Barely a few hours ago, a ship sailed in with the whole of the crew dead except one. This man had said that a fog had rolled in before dark sails appeared next to his ship. Four figures had appeared and vanished leaving all dead, but him in the blink of an eye.

“They come from the shadows.” Those were his last words before he died of shock.

We had brought in all the citizens inside the castle. I ordered that all available people able to fight be prepared for battle. Everything had been prepared for battle as well.

It has been a while in the making, but the fog finally was here. I shuddered recalling everything that we found on his ship.

“Milord, ships at the entrance of the bay,” Someone said to me from close by. I narrowed my gaze and could see black ships at the front of the fog. I didn’t see any ships before the fog came in. The wind picked up speed slowly and a chill crawled down my back.

“Bring out all columns in preparations for an all-out assault on us!” I shouted again and immediately heard the clinking of armor.

More ships began to appear from the fog. It was as if the fog itself was producing the ships. As I watched in horror, a massive ship appeared from the fog that looked vastly different from anything I had ever seen. It had eyes of fire and a mouth that bellowed smoke. I swear I could hear the screams of souls trapped in the mouth as it came closer. On its mast flew a black flag with symbol I had never seen or heard of before. It reminded me of a crown, but yet, it wasn’t.

The smaller ships that had come out from the fog began to land on the beach while the bigger ones stayed out farther. Smaller landing craft were being let down from the bigger ships and making their way toward the beach. Gasps came from the men who stood on the wall with me and new gasps every time more men got onto the wall.

“My lord, there are so many.” Whoever said that was right. More ships kept appearing from the fog and landing. Enemies began to appear in masses on the beach. They continuously poured onto the beach and began to form their ranks from what we could see.

“They are preparing their assault my lord,” I could hear other people saying stuff to me.

“Prepare the defenses and man your posts.” I barked out orders quickly, sending everyone off in an organized mess.

“Prepare to fire the catapults at them and—“I was cut off by a blaring sound coming from the bay. I stared in horror as a massive black shape began to rise from the murky water. I watched it rise up to the cliff heights of the castle and open its eyes that blazed red with hate and death.

“FIRE!” I shouted in terror at the beast before me.

The sound of the catapults releasing their contents filled my ears as the beast raised a giant hand to block the projectiles.

An echo filled the bay and I turned to see the enemy on the beach charging toward the castle gates.

“Don’t let th—“

Niall’s P.O.V.

“Mother, father, I am off to collect fire wood.” I said as I slung my cargo bag over my shoulder.

“That’s fine dear. Bring back enough for the entire evening. No use in you wasting your energy again.” Mother said with a small smile on her face as she walked into hallway.

“Don’t go getting ‘lost’ again Niall,” Father said seriously as he appeared. A smile overtook his features to let me know that he was teasing.

“Don’t listen to your father dear. Gods know how many times he has been ‘lost’.” Mother scolded father softly which caused me to chuckle.

‘I won’t get lost father and I will bring back enough mother,” I finished my words and opened the door to head out.

“Don’t forget Niall, be home before dark. Strange things been seen round these parts.” Mother called out. I glanced back and nodded to her before closing the door.

I took in a deep breath, allowing the new scents of spring to fill my nostrils. I loved this time of year. Everything looked so refreshed and alive and it made me smile. I quickly made my way towards the forest on the northern edge of the village. Most people feared the forest, but not me.

People claimed it was home to our worst fears and monsters that would consume you alive. I had been in this forest many times and had yet to find anything that proved these things true. I’ve seen bears, large cats, deer and other small critters; yet nothing that would be a-part of my worst fears.

I hurried along inside the forest making my way towards my favorite area to collect firewood. It took just a few short minutes to reach it. A peaceful lake sat in the middle of this clearing. I took the sight in as usual before beginning my search for the firewood.  As I collected the firewood I couldn’t help, but think of what mother had said earlier.

“Strange things been seen round these parts,” Her words still echoed in my mind. What were these strange things? It could be anything like an animal, another person wondering at night or—I suddenly heard a snap from somewhere near me. I froze and glanced around, but I could see nothing that could’ve caused the snap. As I scanned the lake, my eyes landed on something very weird, strange and chilling. Four figures stood still on the other side of the lake facing me.
