Wednesday
I stared up at the sky, watching as the clouds formed together into shapes and figures, before fading away into nothing.
I lay on my back, my head resting on my backpack, in the middle of a Parisian park, surrounding by my friends.
Ana was lay on her stomach beside me, making a daisy chain, humming along to the music that was playing from her iPod. Siva lay beside her, tapping the floor to the beat of the music coming from Ana's earphones.
Jasmine was writing in her journal, keeping a note of everything that was happening on the trip. “What are you writing?” Kumar asked, sitting beside her. She clutched the journal to her chest. “For my eyes only!” She said. I smirked. They were cute.
Sally and Jay were playing I Spy and Val and Nikki were taking selfies. There was only one person missing.
As though he could read my mind, Tom appeared from nowhere, sitting down on the grass beside me. I could see his eyes through his raybans. He looked tired. He remained quiet and began to pick out pieces of grass and throw them back down. Why did it irritate me so much?
I stared back up at the sky and sighed, deeply.
I wondered if I should mention what I found last night or if I should keep quiet.
Did Ana know?
She can't know, surely she'd have told me.
“How are you feeling?” She asked Tom.
Tom shrugged and yawned. “I'm okay.” He replied.
Maybe she did know.
I picked up Tom's coat and threw it into his lap. He looked up at me and said nothing. “You're welcome.” I said before turning away.
“Did you two have a fun time last night?” Siva asked with a sarcastic smile. I left it for Tom to speak, wondering if he would let on that he could have killed me.
“Was good, huh, Hawthorne?” He said. I licked my lips, amazed by how he had seemed to have forgotten what happened.
“Oh, yeah, wonderful. I really saw the sights from a new perspective. Almost as though my world had been... turned upside down.” I smiled.
I heard Tom laugh and looked at him.
“We best get going, we're meeting under the Eiffel tower in half an hour.” Sally said, jumping up and brushing the loose grass from her shorts.
Everyone stood up and Tom swung his coat over his shoulder, putting his other arm around me. I frowned with annoyance. “Don't kid yourself. You had a good time. You lived a little. I can tell you're not used to that, Miss Goody-Goody.” He said before sloping away to speak to Siva.
I felt annoyed.
Ana placed her complete daisy chain around my wrist and smiled. I didn't return it. Her smile faded and was replaced with a frown. “What's wrong?” She asked, touching my forearm lightly.
I looked ahead right at Tom, who turned to look at me, a devilish grin on his face.
“He's really not that bad. Was he an idiot last night? I know he is sometimes but he'd never put you in danger or-”
I stopped her.
“You clearly don't know him.” I said.
“I think I know him better than you do.” Ana said, stopping in her tracks. I carried on.
“Whatever you say.” I replied. I turned to look at her and the look on her face could have turned me to stone.
