You know that sound the wind makes when your driving? The nearly silent soft pitched whistling sound as the car cuts through the wind gusts on the highway? It was the sound that let my thoughts wander in order while R&B played softly in the background. Mama was driving, and dad had fallen asleep. We were on the road for an entire day. And before you guess, this isn't some family vacation. This was us moving to the west coast of the country. My brothers were all grown and started their own lives, I'm starting my first year of college this fall. It was time to start new. Mama and daddy decided that Chicago wasn't a great place to stay after retirement. And moving down south wasn't in the question since mama hated the heat and daddy loves his lakes and mountains. So they had a house built in Washington. The new furniture was already at the new house. They tried to make me feel better by telling me that I have my own bathroom in my room in this new house. I have no idea what it looks like, but I do know that my brothers and I all have keys to the place to come over and stay. I mean, I wasn't expecting to stay in Chicago all my life. I am going to miss the city and all the wonderful things one can do downtown, but I'm glad to get away. Mom probably thinks that I was upset with their decision to move out of town, but in all honesty, when I came home the weekend they told me we're moving, it was after midterms.
There's a sense of adventure moving to a different state. And it's my first move. My eldest brother Noah, said that we lived in Michigan before mom found out that she was pregnant with me and that's when they moved to Chicago. I may not look like I'm excited, but I couldn't wait to explore my new home, new town and school. My cousin Isabel and uncle Terry were already there. I couldn't wait to see her. Since she's been there for almost a year, she can probably show me around. I smiled at the thought of exploring Portland with her and new friends.
"I see that smile. What are you thinking about?" Mom questioned in a low pleasant voice. Her eyes met mine in the rearview mirror.
"I'm just... excited mom."
"Yeah... this is a pretty big move. The only other time we've been on the road this long was going to Florida." She laughed. The car fell silent again as my mother and I went back to being in our thoughts. We still had some ground left to cover. It was going to be a while until we get to the house.
"[Name]? Sweetheart wake up! We're here!" Mom chirped. I squinted as my eyes came in contact with the orange rays of the setting sun. We were surrounded by tall trees on a long, foggy, winding road. The car was silent and nothing but the sound of the wind rushing over the care filled the ambiance.
"The middle of nowhere?" I asked sarcastically.
"No silly girl. This is the entry way to the house. Your dad and I want to be far from neighbors but not that far. Isabel and uncle Terry are living in the coach house in the backyard. I furrowed my eyebrows in suspicion. A coach house in our backyard? Just how big is this new house anyway? Isabel refused to tell me what the house looked like. All she kept saying since April was that I was going to 'fucking love my room.' I looked in the rearview mirror at my mom. She had a sly smile on her face not noticing that I was looking at her. Or maybe she did. Dad was snorted in his sleep before he coughed and woke himself up. Mom giggled and placed her hand on his.
"I was just going to wake you."
"We're here already?" He questioned. It was a silent five minutes before we came to a clearing. The house was in the distance. The road went from gravel to grayscale brick. And over on the driver's side, through the clearing of trees, there was a lake and a beautiful view of the mountains.
"We are officially home." Mom said in a sing songy voice.
"[Name], all of this land... this is ours." Dad said. I turned toward him in curiosity.
