{Chapter 2}

***Strange Man's POV***

I let out a wavering breath as I watched his car drive a corner making me lose sight of it. My aching arms remained in front of me and shaky hands wrapped around the now unloaded gun.

I had him in arm's reach! How'd I let him slip out of my hands like that? I've let her down. If I keep this up there's no way I can get to her before getting caught like the fugitive I am. I gotta aim those on my hit list and have them dropping like flies. The adoption agency took her from me thinking I was an unworthy parent and made the decision of handing her another share of parents to keep us apart. Well... Fuck them! What evidence do they have? That's right! False accusations from a lying conceiving bitch that happened to land me in jail.

The loosening grip on the gun compelled for it to drop to the ground freeing my hands to curl into fist and bash into the nearby lampost. Lights lit one after the other within the houses and the outline of the owners appeared through the curtains that covered the windows. The police sirens wailed while it's blue and red lights were being highlighted against the very dark night. I ducked into the shadows preparing to sprint when a bizarre kid with large owl-like eyes, bed head, and a hot pink robe that was two sizes too small wrapped around his figure stumbled his way onto the street with his arms waving wildly to call the attention of the cops. The cop car made a daring and rigorous stop to prevent from running the kid over.

Thanks for the opportunity, kid. By the way, as weird as it is the hot pink kinda suits you.

I took the distraction to my advantage and jumped the fence digging the heels of my feet into the ground to steady my fall. My eyes searched the backyard to find a lake obscuring my escape plan, making me mentally scolded myself for landing into a situation that seems inevitable. I held my breath  before plunging myself into the water of the lake whilst a police officer held the leash of a barking german sheperd in one hand and a flashlight in the other hand. The dog with bared sharp teeth tugged the officer to the edge of the lake causing for the police officer's face to wrinkle in suspicion. Small bubbles were released from my mouth and floated to the surface of the water. My blurred vision saw the boots of the officer heading closer to me while the bright light from the flashlight passed my head by pure luck. With a rapid click, the flashlight was turned off and the police officer turned his back to me. Within that same moment he raspily called out, "ALL CLEAR!" allowing me to release all the tension in my muscles.

A swift lock of the backyard gate had me swimming to the surface. Once I broke through the water, I gasped allowing for the air to reach my burning lungs. My heavy soaking clothes were dragging me down but I forced myself to wade to the edge. I placed my foot on the ground and began to distance myself from the kid's house. With one gloved hand I took the glove off the alternative hand in order to feel for the gun in my pocket only to realize that it had been left behind and probably already placed inside a plastic baggie labeled, "For Inspection."

My heads still happens to be screwed in the right place, cops, because when you finally conclude that inspecting the gun was a total waste of time I will already be a couple of steps ahead of you. Then, soon enough there will be too many steps in between us that you won't be able to catch up.
