Being Prepared

I arrive back at the high-street and let my mum out of the car. "Save my number yeah?" I say to her. She nods her head and waves, as I pull away from her and head back to my house.

I arrive and take Hicter and the newly bought goodies inside my house. I set Hicter down in his carrier, as I set to work in building the cot. It was easy, even without instructions. Just screw in the screw here, cover with a cap there, and remove the plastic. Done. I gently lay Hicter inside the cot, and give him a hand crocheted teddy bear. "This is Mr B" I whisper to him "keep him safe now." I cover him in a soft blanket that I bought and kissed him goodnight.

I then got to work at finding a place to stack the soon-to-be-used high chair, and started preparing a breast milk substitute, as he was too young for anything else. One spoon of powder to one spoon of hot water.

As soon as I was done with the milk, he started crying. Not screaming as loud as he can, just, gently crying. I speedily walk towards the cot and pick him up, supporting his head, I balance him in my left arm and, after checking it was cool, I feed him the bottle.

He finishes pretty quickly, and falls back asleep in my arms, so I carefully lie him down in his carrier, and position it towards me, so that I can see if he wakes up. I grab a bag of nappies, and a heavy duty shoulder bag I bought. I put the nappies in the bag, and place in some tissues, wipes, nappy cream, spare clothes for Hicter and a blanket. I place the newly made baby bag on the sofa and go to get a bar of chocolate.

On my return Hicter awakens and stares at me, so I pull out my sofa bed (I have a real one too) and pull Hicter's cot to one side. I adjust the barrier on the side of the cot so that it is level with my bed and place Hicter inside. I wrap my arm around him in a hug, and that is how we fall asleep.
