An hour couldn't go by any slower, though I knew I should be paying attention, my level of focus has completely diminished since last night. In the classroom, a few fairies were whirling around students heads, some of them mocking my professor by waving infront of their face or mimicking their movements.
With how many classes I have been missing in the last month and sleeping in class, my professor must already think I am a troublemaker. This semester was the hardest I had ever experienced and yet it was going to be my last with my classes not even being as hard as they were last semester.
As soon as the clock struck 11:50 I was out the door, racing toward adventure
"Hey," I heard a familiar voice.
"Hey," I exclaimed, turning around I noticed Michael and Laurens obscure new wardrobe that definitely was not the clothes I had given them earlier.
Micheal was wearing a white trench coat with his ball cap still kept on.
Lauren was also looking a little strange with her red leggings, and a large brown hat.
"Um, hey what are you guys wearing?" I asked.
"We went to some resale shop," Lauren stated.
"Okay," I said "do you guys want to start or..."
"Before we do, you have to promise that you won't say anything." Michael interjected.
"I haven't been saying anything though."
"But you want to, don't you?" Lauren said eying me suspiciously.
I thought about it. I did not want to hide anything from Jeremy. I saw what happened when I didn't communicate effectively. But this wasn't my secret. I glanced at Lauren, she lifted an eyebrow, her hands on her hips.
Michael was avoiding eye contact and looked out in the distance over my shoulder.
"I know he should not be involved, but I can't hide secrets from Jeremy."
"Yes you can," Lauren said "trust us, all we have to is destroy the game and then you won't have to worry about it.
"Wait, destroy the game?"
Michael turned to Lauren, his mouth agape. He tugged on her sleeve. "Didn't we say we would tell her about that later!"
"Yes but," Lauren looked back and fourth from Michael and me. She sighed. "We want to protect you and ourselves, to do that, you need to be quiet for now, Understood?"
I thought about it, if it was going to be temporary then I could tell Jeremy about it after . Problem solved.
"Okay, I will keep it a secret for now," I agreed. "but why do you want to destroy the game?"
"Because people can and will die." Michael said.
Lauren butted in "Think about what would happen if the game goes out to the public, Fairies would decrease making it harder for people to recharge."
"It makes sense, but why would people want to play a game if their life is on the line?" I asked.
Michael looked at his feet "Because some people have nothing else to live for."
"Not to mention we're all forced to stay in this game until it's destroyed, some people want to back out but they can't," Lauren explained.
My eyes widened "What, but can't you take this necklace off and call it quits?"
Lauren smirked at me "Well if your so curious why don't you try and take it off."
I was skeptical, but in my decided to take her suggestion. I reached for the necklace and tried to put it over my head, but for some reason it wouldn't budge. It was if it was connected to my own skin.
I felt like my stomach was doing cartwheels, my hands started to shake. I though I had a choice to keep this new fate, but I was wrong. Unless we did anything we would be stuck forever.
"Now do you see why we have to shut it down?" Lauren questioned.
"Yes, so how do we destroy the game?"
"We don't know, we have to find the control center for the game, to do that, we need to find the game maker."
"Do you know anything about the game maker?"
"Yes, no," Michael said, "never mind we are wasting time. We still need to teach you how to work the game."
I wanted to question them further, but I figured we would have plenty of time later.
"First of all, do you know how to get to the menu?" Michael asked.
"Yes, from what I've seen I just have to tap on the jewel," I stated tapping it in the process.
Michael smiled politely "Good, you're catching on fast."
I smiled to myself, this was going to be a piece of cake.
Lauren and Michael continued to show me more aspects to the game. by using the menu I could not only pick out wepons but find different armor and accessories. There was also a place where I could buy faries, but when I saw how faries cost twenty bucks a piece I was against it.
The game also had a pause button for fighting so that you and your teammates can think up a plan.
"I can pause the game," I questioned "how long can it stay in pause?"
"For about an hour," Lauren said.
"Really, thats a lot of time."
Michael and Lauren turned to eachother and gave me a grim expression.
"The game will only say paused if you stand still," Lauren said "if you move at all the game will start imediately."
"So, there really is no escape from this place," I stated, looking in the distance to hide my fear.
"Only if you get a safe house," Michael said in a hopeful tone "then you can be away from the game at that location."
I finally understood why they were paranoid since I met them. This game does not give you any room to breath and it seems that my only hope to have my normal life back was to go against the game.
I realized in that moment that the adventure had just begun and in order to survive I was going to have to adapt to the wishs of this unfair and mysterious game.
