I was so excited. Okay, that's an understatement. I was so happy and exhilarated that I felt like I could explode all over my room any moment. I mean, who wouldn't be excited about something like this? I've been waiting for this my whole life.

As I was dancing around my room to no music at all, I heard a light knock at my door. I plopped onto my bed and called out a "come in!" I didn't even try to contain my enthusiasm. No one could wipe this smile off my face. Not today.

The door to my room slowly creaked open, and my little brother's head came into view. I grinned at him. "Hey, Mikes."

"Someone's happy today," Mikey commented, smirking at me. He walked over to my bed and sat next to me.

"You would be too. I''m eighteen today! I can finally start using magic outside of training and I get my first grimoire!" I fell back on my bed still grinning like an idiot.

"That's true. But you should probably put your celebrating on hold and start getting ready or your going to be late." Mikey mentioned. I knew he was right. If I was late to this ceremony, my parents would probably ground me forever. In families like ours, this ceremony was incredibly important. I noticed he was staring at my face.

"Take a picture, it'll last longer." I got up from my bed and started working on what I should wear. It was an important day, therefore what I wore was an important choice.

"Sorry," Mikey said, chuckling. "It's just I don't see you smiling like that too often." I turned to look at him and my grin became more of a sad smile. I couldn't help walking up to Mikey and giving him a hug. "You have a nice smile."

"I love you, Mikes," I mumbled, holding him tightly. Eventually, he pulled away.

"Well, I better leave you to it," Mikey said softly before walking out of my room and closing the door. My grin returned to my face and I continued to get ready. After rummaging through my closet -which had a very small range of colors- I settled on a white dress shirt with a red tie and a black vest over it with black dress pants. I brushed through my hair but ended up leaving it a little messy.

I looked away from my mirror and to the empty shelf where I planned to put all my magic stuff-grimoires, potions, amulets, etc.. My grin became even bigger just thinking about how I'll finally be able to use magic after eighteen years of watching my parents cast spells and incarnations. Well, other than when I'm at my three-hour long magic class every Saturday, but that doesn't count.

I headed out of my room and down the stairs into the kitchen. Everyone else was already at the table eating. I sat down in my seat. I noticed mom had made us all eggs and bacon. Usually, we just all make ourselves cereal, but I guess it was a pretty special day.

"Are you excited, Gerard?" My dad asked me. My mouth was already stuffed with eggs, so I nodded vigorously.

"Of course he is! I remember on my eighteenth birthday, I had planned out every little detail, including what hand soap I would use and which socks I should wear." I chuckled slightly at my mom. "But enough about me. It's your birthday!" My mom reached under the table and grabbed a small box decorated with wrapping paper and ribbon. She set on the table and slid it over to me. "Happy birthday." She nearly whispered but the elation in her voice was very obvious.

"Thanks, mom," I said and kissed her on the cheek. I started to unwrap the present, which almost made me feel guilty because of how nicely it was wrapped. Once I had unwrapped it and opened the cardboard box it was in, I found that the present was a book.

The book was made of old leather, and the pages had yellowed. The book was labeled Everything A Witch/Wizard Needs to Know About Dragons. I immediately recognized it as a family grimoire.
