"Here." Valerie says as she hands me a cup of tea. Lemon tea, my favorite. I take a sip and relish in the sweet and sour taste. It's comforting to my soul. Perhaps it will heal my mind right now.

Then again, perhaps not.

Valerie leans forward and places a soft kiss on my lips. I can't help but smile into her kiss. Distraction or not, I can't ignore how deeply drawn I am to Valerie Ortega.

"What was that for?" I whisper against her ear. She lets out a soft giggle.

"I like you Todd Martin, IT guy from Lotus Industries, the man that likes cheese sandwiches and pickles on the side with cherry pie for dessert. I like you."

"How do you know what I like to eat?" I ask surprised. She lets out another laugh and it's like music to my ears.

"I can smell it on you." Suddenly she licks my cheek and lets out a playful howl.

The gesture doesn't sit well with me. I can't help but find it odd... and seriously wolfish. The behavior instantly reminds me of the video I had seen at Lotus Industries. I set my tea on the coffee table.

"Excuse me, but I need to use your restroom." I tell her.

"First door on the left." She says as she points towards the hallway.

Once in the restroom I close the door and press my back against it. I take a deep breath, trying to ignore the way my heart thuds loudly in my ears. It's so loud in fact I'm certain the beauty in the living room can hear it. I run to the sink, flip the knobs, and splash water on my face.

I'm being stupid really.

Pretty girl wants to kiss me and here I am acting like an idiot. Who else would run from a beauty like that?

She isn't a beauty.

The thought comes unwarranted in my mind.

Perhaps she's a beast.

I laugh into the towel as I dry my face. I'm being a fool. I've been doing too much digging into Lotus Industries. Plus, there's Halloween and a full moon right around the corner. It's just freaking me out is all. I have nothing to worry about.

I place the towel back on the rail. I look in the mirror and take a deep breath, preparing myself to exit the door and return to Valerie Ortega's side. As I turn to leave my eyes catch something in the trash can. I lean forward and peer inside. For a moment, I can't comprehend what I am seeing. I reach inside the trash can and pull out something sharp and dark.

Fingernail clippings.

There's no mistaking it.

It's not quite human shaped, and not quite dog shaped. But something strangely in between. My heart rate picks up again as I feel a panic attack just under the surface. I throw the fingernail back in the trash can like it just tried to kill me. It's then that I notice slight traces of blood on tissue paper within the bin next to the overly large fingernails.

Eager to get out of the house I throw open the door. I don't stop in the living room, where Valerie is waiting for me. Instead I leave my jacket, my wallet, and my keys to my apartment on the couch. My only thought is to run, to flee.

I throw open the door and rush out into the crisp night air.

"Todd? Wait?" Valerie hollers as she hurries after me.

I begin to run. Faster and faster as I dash down the dark-lit street.

"Todd, don't go, it's dangerous out here."
