Secret Identity (A Young justice Fanfiction)

Chapter 8

The Team was finally going on their first official mission! (They didn't really count the whole Mister Twister fiasco since they weren't assigned to that.) Batman had tasked them with investigating a drug called Venom. Everything was fine, except for the fact that Batman didn't assign a leader.

Because of him being the most experienced many would assume that Robin would want to become the leader. But that was not the case. Batman had warned him not to draw too much attention to himself so they had both agreed that it would not be the best course of action for him to become leader. That would just remind the League that there was an unknown child leading their sidekicks into battle. So instead Robin just let the rest of the team fight it out. Sure, he would have liked to be leader, but he couldn't risk it.

When they arrived, Wally instantly took charge. He tried to lead, but Robin disagreed with many of the things he said. So instead he disappeared into the shadows. (This was supposed to be a covert mission after all.)

Robin disappeared as the team heard gunshots break out. Aqualad had been dropped further away to give them another look out "Steer clear. Swing wide."

Wally rolled his eyes "Well I gotta find Robin first!" he zoomed down towards the gun shots. Unfortunately, he tripped and landed right in the middle of it. Fighting broke out as the others raced to help him. Superboy and Miss Martian were taking out goons left and right but they were still getting swarmed. Suddenly a shadow dropped down from the trees.

"Wow Wally great plan!" Robin said sarcastically as he took down bad guys left and right "You know I forgot the part of the briefing where Batman told us to totally break our cover!"

Wally glared at him as they started tying up the goons "Dude where did you go?! We had a plan!"

"No You had a plan." Robin corrected "A plan that I knew would get us caught, so instead I disappeared into the shadows."

"What are you arguing about?" they turned and suddenly Aqualad stepped out of the bushes.

Wally glared at Robin "The Boy Wonder here is trying to take over!"

Robin was surprised "No I'm not!"

Wally got up in his face "Yes you are! And let's face it do we really want to be led by a thirteen year old kid?!"

Now Robin was upset "I don't want to lead! But just look at yourself! It's not like you're a very mature 15!"

Wally got up in his face "At least they can trust me." he pointed to the rest of the team "I told them my secrete identity. You've never told anyone yours. How can we even be sure you're on our side?"

Robin just stared at him in shock. The other three glared at Wally "Kid Flash that is enough!" He turned to Aqualad. "Robin clearly does not want to be leader and that was a very rude thing to say. He has been our friend for years! How can you even suggest that he is not on our side? And you should remember that it is not his choice to keep his identity from us." Wally hung his head in shame. Boy was he a jerk! "Now can we get back to the mission?"

"Where'd Robin go?" they looked over to Superboy then started searching the rest of the area.

Wally sighed "it's my fault. He ran off after I yelled at him." he punched a tree in frustration "I'm such a bad friend!"

Megan looked to all of her teammates. They were all in different forms of distress. "That's enough!" She finally said "Look, truth is we need a leader. Robin clearly has no interest and neither do I. Superboy?" Connor shook his head. She then turned to Wally "I'm sorry but Kid Flash I do not think you are right to lead this team. You rush into things, which is fine when you work with the Flash. But a team needs a leader who is calm and collected. So I would like to nominate Aqualad."

They all looked to him "If you would like I would be honored to lead the Team." The all nodded "Ok then. I think our first task should be to find out where they are keeping the stock of Venom."

"I believe I might know niños." They looked over to one of the tied up goons. He was very buff and was wearing a mask with a skull design.

Connor glared at him "Why should we trust you?"

He chuckled "Have you never heard that 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend'? There is a secrete tunnel into the factory. I can take it to you."

Megan examined mind "He is telling the truth about the tunnel. But we should be careful, he is trying to hide something by reciting football scores in Spanish."

Aqualad nodded "Cut him loose."

They arrived at the factory and found that it was empty. Bain pointed out a room that held the records. Aqualad had asked Miss Martian to investigate. She was surprised to see a guard passed out outside of the room. She was couscous as she entered but she quickly let her guard down "Robin what are you doing here?"

He didn't turn away from the computer "KF was mad. There's no use in arguing with him when he gets like that. He winds up saying things that he would regret so I thought I'd leave before he said too much."

She blinked "You left so that he wouldn't be mad at himself later."

"Yep." He stood up with a disk in his hand "I've got all the info we need and I planted bombs in the delivery crates. Those shipments won't be leaving this factory. Let's get out of here."

Megan followed Robin the stairs "You and Wally must fight a lot for you to know him so well."

Robin chuckled "Yeah. We fight constantly. But we're best friends so it's all just fun really."

Megan thought about this as they met up with the rest of the team. She might not have known Wally and Robin but this was the first time she had ever seen them fight.

As soon as Robin got back to the mountain he left for Gotham. The team had told him about Aqualad and he agreed that he would make a good leader. Robin also told them about what he had found in the research. Apparently Cobra had somehow found a way to merge Venom with the Blockbuster formula from Cadmus. This put them all on edge but there was nothing they could do about it now. Wally apologized and he accepted it, Robin left right after.

Wally sat down and put his head in his hands. "I'm so horable..."

Megan sat down next to him "What's wrong?"

He sighed "I was a jerk to Robin. I can tell he's still really hurt by what I said." He looked her in the eyes "This is the first time we've ever had a fight like this."

This took Megan by surprise "Really? Robin said you guys fought all the time. But since you were best friends it was ok."

Wally just stared at her "What? No we never fight. Why would he say that..."

"He said he left because you say things you regret when you get mad." She continued "He didn't want you to feel bad about saying something mean to him later."

Wally just sat there as he tried to process that. Robin left so that Wally wouldn't be mad at himself. He knew he could get mean when he was mad at someone. He just didn't realize that Robin was willing to go out of his way to keep him from berating himself. He really was a good friend...

~time skip~

Robin plopped onto his mattress tiredly. Today had been a long day. He peeled away his mask and he found that there were still tear tracks hidden underneath. He felt bad about lying to Megan but he didn't want her to find out why he had really left.

Wally had no way of knowing that what he had said would strike so close to home for Robin. Ever since Batman told him about the form he had been afraid that his friends would stop trusting him. And Wally confirmed that fear. Sure, he hadn't really meant it. But it proved that if they were desperate enough and they needed someone to take the fall, they wouldn't be afraid to use him. He'd have to be more careful around them, like there wasn't anything wrong. He couldn't stand out.

Another tear dripped down as he started to drift off to sleep. At least Batman was still on his side. And that's all he really needed...
