"He has brown hair right?" Skye asked me as we made our way through the crowd. She may be fast, but she sure as hell wasn't quiet.
"Yeah, Skye," I responded, "but try to be a little quieter. I need you to be my eyes, not my mouth." I just needed her to help me scout out the area. I was familiar with this part of the city, but I didn't know anyone or where they would live.
Not even a second after finishing my sentence, I felt a foot kick at the front of mine, causing me to pitch forward. My hands shot out, breaking my fall against the hard ground. I could hear people start to scuffle around me, never pausing their gait to see what was happening. Luckily, I was able to get back up to my feet without anyone paying attention to me. That whole time, my little demon of a sister was cackling.
"Oh yes," I turned to her, "you really got me." I reached out to ruffle her hair, but she ducked under my hand. "Let's go before your horrid laugh draws us attention." I started forward, towards the little apartment that we call home.
"Wait a second," she said after jogging a little to catch up to my long strides. "That's it? We just," she paused for a moment and leaned in to speak quieter, "stalked him to just leave?" I could hear what she meant in her tone of voice. She wanted to know why we didn't move on him.
"First off," I started once we got to a part of town that was a lot less populated, "we didn't stalk him. We simply learned his whereabouts. And second off, yes that's it. I'll send in Kai to talk with him in a little. Maybe that way I can get him in my element. Right now I am at a slight disadvantage."
I could almost hear the wheels turning in her head. She definitely was more interested in my work than Kai was. Every time I needed someone to scout for me, she would jump at the chance within seconds. Kai always liked being more manipulative. He would go in after, talk with the person, and get them to do as he said.
Sidestepping the old homeless man that slept just next to our door, I unlocked the door and went inside. It wasn't until I was up two stairs when Skye finally responded.
"Ah," she started, "so you plan to trick him into going into a dark alley all alone. Wham! You'll attack when he least expects it." In the darkness of the hallway I could see her hands move vigorously as she spoke.
"That's one way to put it." I mumbled, finally stepping up to the door to the apartment. The inside was small, my head was inches from the ceiling, and was sparingly decorated. It had all the necessities: a fireplace for both warmth and cooking, a bed for the twins to share, an old mattress that I slept on, and an old ice box for storing food. The building used to be a dormitory, so it had a bathroom and showers down the hall. It wasn't much, but it was something.
"Kai!" I called out once I entered the small room. "Malakai come here." I said out loud after he didn't respond my first call. I could hear him breathing and giggling behind the ice box, but I decided to play along for another second. "Huh. So no more Kai. Well I guess I will just go sell his books then." I said suggestively, stepping towards his belongings.
"No!" he yelled springing up from behind the fridge. "I'm here, I swear."
"I'll back off." I told him turning to the small mattress that I called my bed. "Hey Kai, I'ma need you to do me another favor"
"What's the job?" Unlike Skye, he sounded almost hesitant.
"Uh, a man named Richard Bush and...well Skye could you fill him in on appearance." I could hear her begin to ramble as I started to doze off. Tonight we hunt.
"Ros!"
I was awoken from my siblings both shaking me awake. The room had fallen dark and the fire had been lit.
