Chapter 3
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
The sound of boot heel on marble rang out, loud and clear in the desolate hallways of the Banks Manor, over powering the sound of the thunderstorm raging outside. The silencer on his gun clicked in place as he stopped in front of a warm, mahogany brown door.
“Momma!” Mars listened intently to the last words they would ever omit. The little girl oozed an innocence as she continued to shriek with laughter. She sounded so young that even he hesitated where he stood. Mars quickly shook those vulgar thoughts out of his head.
He couldn’t afford to fail this time. If he could not do such a simple thing, life would be hell for his own family let alone the perfect family picture that was about to be shattered.
“What would happen to me if you die momma?” Vivian’s voice suddenly turned unusually mature and sobered as she asked her mother. Mars’ heart stopped beating, thinking that she was about the ruin his plans, but she elaborated no further, letting him sigh in relief.
There was a clink of metal on glass, followed by a brief pause before a strained, melodic voice filled the air, “Well I hope it doesn’t happen any time soon.” Mars snorted softly but swiftly muffled it, praying they didn’t hear it. They didn’t.
Knowing it was make-or-break time, he steeled himself before slamming the door open, making it bang loudly against the wall. He hoped that it would attract the attention needed so Vivian could escape before her mind was forever tainted by evil.
How could I harm such a blameless girl? he thought. No matter how much he was paid, all of his training would come undone for this one girl. Killing both was no longer an option. Instinct told him that sometime in the next future, they could meet again but he disregarded it. He wasn’t killing out of instinct this time, nor should he listen now.
Cecilia was quivering on the bed clutching her child in a tight embrace before her frightened eyes met Mar’. Recognition flashed across her eyes before they were instantly replaced with anger and hate, not too unlike her sister’s.
“Your sister sends her regards Cecilia,” he forced out, knowing any more words that he uttered were going to chock him before they passed his lips. She gasped, dropping her angry façade, only to be replaced with one of shock. Underneath her, Vivian started to whimper quietly. He had to pull the trigger before his resolve came crashing down.
The sound of the bullet penetrating the air was almost audible, but not over the ear splintering, mangled scream that Cecilia let out as the bullet piercing her heart as it shuddered to a stop. She slumped forward onto Vivian, whose head poked out; eyes looked glazed and hazy before they focused on Mars, taking him in.
Realisation dawned to her as she felt a warm, sticky substance run through her blood like sand, “Mummy!”
Mars quickly started retreating out the door. If he was caught before he reached her father’s chamber, he would not live to see daylight. Making his way out, Mars felt something weighing heavily in his heart. He couldn’t place his finger on the foreign feeling but suddenly forgot his anguish.
Bumping into Emily, who had a wicked smile plaster on her face, told him that either way, he had to run. She would hunt him down, capture him and eradicate him off the face of the earth. He had to run…
…Escape…
…Hide…
Suddenly, a light rap on the door woke me from my bizarre dream. “Yes?” I rubbed my eyes in a vain attempt to wake myself up. I groggily checked the digital clock on my wooden mahogany bedside table. The red numbers flashed 10:47am.
