Chapter 4

Zarah was artfully stretched out in an old-fashioned Roman lounge chair as Emily poured chai tea into her cup. She watched it in suspicion before dismissing it of her attention.

“Do you mind if we have a look at what we can pick up from Zarah’s brain frequencies, James?” I asked as he gazed at the scene on the television mounted on the wall. A truckload of new surveillance equipment had been shipped in the previous day and he was eager to start testing his now toys.

“I’ll see what I can do babe,” James replied causing me to roll her eyes at him. He quickly turned his attention to another network of cables, monitors and buttons, typing at the speed of light.

Him and his obnoxious man ego, if he wasn’t good at what I paid him to do, he’s be out the door faster than he can say ‘babe’ next time. I playful threatened in faux malice with, “Call me ‘babe’ one more time and I’ll knee you where the sun don’t shine. Hard.”

He placed a hand over his heart with a wounded expression. “Harsh Darl. I get it. It’s because you secretly love me more than you want to admit.” I thinned my lips playfully and decided to let the statement slip. There was no point in adding more fuel for his ego to grow. I’ve always wondered why he never decided to be an actor with that dramatic streak in him.

Finally focusing my full attention to the screen, she watched as faint pulses began to emerge from the seemingly straight line. “She’s probably pissed off at you. You don’t even need the machine to show that,” he announced as he swerved around to face Rebecca.

“Thanks, Captain Obvious.”

James mock bowed down, imagining a standing ovation echoing around the room because replying with, “You’re welcome Lieutenant Sarcasm.”

“Major General more like,” I corrected. I wasn’t going to be beating in army ranks too. “Wanna start nominating weapons?” I asked as I lightly bounced on the balls of my feet with my iPhone 5S in hand.

He held up his hand to stop me. “Wait, things are going to get interesting. Watch Zarah’s expression, she always has the best mood swings ever known to mankind.” I obediently sat down and looked up at the screen. Zarah’s face twisted in disgust as the man I saw at Jonathon’s Birthday Ball a few days ago sauntered in, looking like he owned the place.

“So what’s your plan with this Rebecca? She’s caused quite a stir recently,” he inquired as he accepted the tea Emily offered.

“Just go with the flow I suppose for now. What else can we possibly do Mars?” Emily replied, making Zarah’s face sour as she tried to suppress her anger by cuddling up to her Chihuahua, Pablo.

James suddenly rose up, out of the chair and winked at her as he stretched. “See? What did I say? That face never gets old.” Rebecca, distorted, shook her head to clear it as she stood up. She just couldn’t understand why James loved, meaning loved loved watching Zarah squirm. “Okay, I’ll ready to see my preciouses.”

“I’m not your precious? That hurt.” I copied him by placing my hand on my heart with a sad, almost tearful expression on my face.

“Aww there’s always room for you,” he replied without missing a beat as he raised his eyebrows suggestively. I burst out laughing at that expression before sobering up.

“Boys and their toys. I’m convinced you only like me because of my weapons collection.” I swiftly picked up my phone and exited the surveillance room. James promptly followed suit, turning the light out as he went.
