I woke up with sounds of shouting and barking coming from outside my room. The sun, doing is job of burning my eyelids, forced me to shift in my bed. If only I hadn't forgotten that I wasn't in my room but onto a tree...
That's how I fully woke up. My foot being stuck in a branch and the rest of my body hanging in the air, head first. Great. Just great.
Fixing myself up, I took on my surroundings remembering why I was here. Here being in the Clovelist Kingdom's forest. The barking and shouting were coming from the King and his court. Probably hunting some poor deer. Which reminded me of how hungry I was.
Time to catch the deer right under their noses.
I swiftly climbed down my tree and began to track the beast. If the dogs were coming this way, and the wind blowing on my back, that meant the deer would sense me and would turn left. The right way leading to a small village. I waited a little, just enough to let the wind carry my scent, and took the left path.
I ran without making a noise. No fallen leaf crisping under my feet. I felt like a wild animal, a predator that nothing could stop. And I loved that.
Then I saw it.
The deer had stopped near a river, trying to recover from it's sprint in the woods. I armed my bow and shot without hesitating right in it's eye causing the animal to die instantly and quietly.
As the barking were approching fast, I decided to take the deer into the river and hide in a little cavern I knew, not far from where I was. The water would erase our scent, and the dogs would be lost, leaving me time to skin my prey.
Everything worked as planned, and I was left in peace as the royals gave up their hunt. Once done, I cleaned my knife and arrow and set a little fire to cook a piece of meat.
Lord, how much I loved meat.
Master often told me how childish I was ; risking being discovered just for the sake of eating meat instead of simple fruits. But eh, it can't be helped, besides as I was now doing missions on my own I was the only one to decide. And debates with myself were not hard to win.
After some time relaxing myself, I decided it was time to get to work. The target was a soldier of Clovelist's castle. Master didn't tell me the entire story, and I didn't want to know, but I had to end the life of the man before Thursday. Which meant I had three days left.
Was he married? Does he had children? Was he a faithful man? None of this mattered to me. The only important thing was that if I succeeded before the due day, I would be able to spent time training myself at the base camp.
And so I went into investigating the shifts of that soldier. It wasn't really difficult, as I figured out. The man uncounsciously helped me by saying out loud that we was on a break at six tonight and was planning on fishing in the lake that was one mile away from here. If only he had seen the shadow in the tree above him, he certainly would have shut up. This guy wasn't doing his job really well. His death would not be a big loss for the commander.
Satisfied with what I learned, I climbed down my tree and explored the lake for the rest of the day, setting my moves.
That one would be easy.
