I finally reached the end of my trip. I stood on a cliff, the base camp was located down there.
As I walked to reach the big metalic doors of the entrance, I was able to feel it. The greeting of the spicky grey walls of the camp. The home.
My home.
Or rather, the place where I've been trained mercilessly to become an assassin feared by the people, yet paid by them to do their dirty works. I suffered so much pain there, but still this was the only place I knew. This was my home as well as my hell.
And I was coming back from a (not so) successful mission.
Once I entered, I was greeted by a rock flying right in my face. I tried to duck but knew I've been too slow as I felt a sharp pain in my left cheek.
"Oi Elie, you were not focusing! How many times do I have to tell you that you should always be on edge, even at the camp? "
Raising on my feet, I turned to look at the guy that voice belonged to. Ethan, a tall red haired was eyeing me with a satisfied grin plastered on his face, his hands on his hips. The man was something like two years older than me, that would made him around twenty-two years old or so. As far as I can remember, we've always been together.
Don't get me wrong, I don't have a crush on him or something. We are rivals since childhood, if you can call children learning killing skills "childhood". Besides, he was one of the few persons here that were able to defeat me in combat. Something I will always try to fix.
"How dare you scratch my pretty face like that?" I faked being hurt.
"You don't need that to work do ya?"
And he was right. I could have been sent to train as a spy. Mostly women chose that career for they can use their face and body to learn things from important people, but I didn't. I wanted to feel the wind blows my hair, the aching pain after climbing trees for an entire day and the joy of being free into the wild. It gave me the sensation that if I wanted I could do whatever I wanted, leave the guild, the master, these spicky grey walls, this hell.
I would be able to choose my own missions and decline others if I wanted to. Find targets suitables for me. I would not be forced to report to the master.
The master.
Crap!
I ran to the wooden house in the farest corner of the base camp.
"Fight against you later, Ethan!"
I am going to be lectured for being late AND for screwing up the mission. Plus, I didn't get to eat yet, and I am starving just fine.
As I arrived at the door, I noticed it was already open. I was about to knock when a deep gruffy voice said
"Eliana, glad you finally decided to report to me. Sit and talk."
I then proceeded to tell him everything that happened since my departure. Trying not to miss a single detail, he would eventually find out anyway, might as well shorten my detention here. Once I was done I wasn't surprised to hear what followed next.
"You had one simple job: kill one soldier. You even had three whole days to plot your move and you failed just because you wanted to rest here?! You are a disapointment Eliana. For the entire guild. Your seller was right back then, you are useless. I thought we could make a great weapon out of you but you keep failing us."
The words stung. I heard them so many time, yet it seems as if I would never be able to let them slide off of myself. Besides, being remembered that you were sold as a child isn't exactly very comforting in the first place.
"I beg your pardon master, I promise I will do good next time. Just please, give me another chance. Let me prove you that I am a great assassin, a useful weapon." I bowed my head in submission and I hated that.
I hated everything about that heartless fat man with greasy hair. Seriously does he put grease on them? Does he even take showers?
Focus Eliana, you are not out of troubles yet.
Just as I told myself that, my belly decided to let me know it was time to eat. Hearing that, the master cackled darkly.
"Oh, I almost forgot. As a punishment for your lazyness and fail, you are not allowed to eat dinner and will train until I tell you to stop. I'll send someone to watch you. Is it clear?"
"Crystal clear sir." I said while gritting my teeth.
Wonderful. Just perfect.
Welcome back in hell, me.
