Shitty Glasses

It was funny how their legs shook and their fingers trembled.

They were nervous.

Not an uncommon emotion but not necessarily a wanted one.

Inhaling deeply, Hanji adjusted their tortoiseshell glasses and in the words of Erwin, their 'quite snazzy' bowtie and walked forwards, grinning at the petite Korean women that had settled on sending her a look that could send a lesser being to meet their maker after playing a Russian roulette of facial expressions, ranging from anger, disbelief and skepticism that could either make you laugh out loud or piss your pants.

Not Hanji. They were here to win.

Gliding past the large mahogany doors, they grinned warmly at the agents all huddled together sending them cautious glares and mildly ambiguous visual threats  Making their way forwards towards the end of the crimson hallway, their attention was diverted momentarily as a head of black hair, stormed past them broom in hand and a mighty scowl on his face.

Almost forgetting the reason they'd stepped into the building in the first place, the bespectacled spy let loose a snort and had to deliver themselves a good healthy dose of reality.

In the form of a pinch.

"Well colour me yellow and call me Jezebel, is that Lil Levi?"

Ears prickling, Levi felt the urge to turn around.

And when he did, he severely wished he hadn't.

He stood face to face, well if looking at the situation with accurate proportionality, face to chest, with his favourite nightmare.

Well if it wasn't the joker itself.

What was this place turning into Gotham city?

In a rare display of emotion, his lips curled up and his eyes flashed angrily, his eyebrows pinched together, as he grabbed their wrist, dragging them behind a corner and performing an enraged once-over.

"What the heck are you doing here?" He demanded his voice coming out as an angry hiss and the only thought that Hanji could comprehend was some sort of abnormal cross between snake and Pepe.

They needed to stop hanging around Sasha.

Digging up their cover story, Hanji's eyes filled with false tears and they inhaled deeply, hoping they portrayed the epitome of sympathy and post-arrival trauma.

"My handler was a liar. He said that if I did as he said he'd let her live. One failed mission was all it took for him to destroy everything I cared for. So I'm here, I know I can't maintain a normal life it won't be long before someone figures out who I am. And I'd rather have the protection af a new ageny sooner rathe than later. Don't turn me away Levi, you're all I have left"

They broke down for real, the story for some reason hitting too close to home. Hiccuping and folding in on themselves, they tried to steady their breathing and calm down.

For some reason, Levi felt hot tears prick at his eyes and the undeniable need to embrace them and wipe their tears away. To keep that stupid grin on their face at all times.

He wanted Hanji to be happy.

Wrapping his arms around them, he rocked them side to side, whispering little tokens of reassurance, feeling his heartbreak as tears streamed down their face and they hiccuped pathetically.

Hanji felt their breathing steady as the brunette leaned into Levi's embrace, trying to make themselves as small as possible so they could forget what happened so many years ago. They didn't want to remember but they knew it was something they couldn't forget.

The silence suffocated Levi and he felt his sanity slip away as it stretched on. He needed to keep himself occupied, for only God knows what he would do if he sat here any longer, serenaded by the whirring of the air conditioner up ahead. Reaching towards the tortoiseshell spectacles, a gift from Erwin himself, he plucked them off their face, pulling a handkerchief from his back pocket and wiping the lenses vigorously, a scowl sliding onto his face as he noticed how dirty they were.

"I might as well call you Shitty Glasses. How the fuck do you mess something up so much" He muttered, trying not to look them in the face, for fear he'd do something stupid, like kiss them or start singing 'Twinkle twinkle star' in medieval French.

He needed to re-evaluate a lot of life choices after this.

Not expecting an answer to his comment, Levi was shocked when a soft voice broke the silence.

"Shitty glasses, I like that"

The black haired male lifted his head slowly and almost went into cardiac arrest. He came face to face with long tear-soaked lashes framing large caramel eyes and that stupid smile he hadn't realized he had come to love.

Hanji was beautiful.

Standing abruptly, Levi almost tripped upon the briefcase he had not realized Hanji has been carrying, dragging them along with him, marching down the hallway, ignoring the skeptical looks and angry glare that Petra shot at Hanji.

The strawberry blonde female clearly thought it was her business to stick her nose unto all of Levi's business and she glided in front of him, her petite frame obstructing Levi's way, causing his body to tense with annoyance and Hanji's eyebrows to shoot up higher than the entire length of Levi's body. Petra glared at Hanji, hostility and an emotion Levi couldn't quite place flashing across her auburn eyes before her face melted into a cold mask.

"Who's she"

Levi felt Hanji stiffen and attempt to take a step forwards, probably preparing to deliver the same speech they had so graciously preached to him upon their first meeting. Lacing his fingers with theirs, Levi non-verbally told them to park their ass where they stood as he regarded Petra, trying to convince himself that he would get away with using feminism as an excuse to punch her in the face.

"Hanji is their name and anything illegal is their game! They're also gender neutral so please don't call them a woman, though they do look like one."

Hanji's eyes widened and they chuckled at the familiar speech, giving Levi's hand a squeeze, feeling rather than seeing Levi's face go red as he temporarily lifted his eyes to the heavens.

Petra, on the other hand, did not appreciate Levi sticking up for them, her scowl becoming deeper and her hair appearing to stand on end, crackling with anger. Now even Hanji knew when to stop and stood down, returning to their designated spot behind Levi, leaving him to fight their battle

Live string, Levi.

"If you keep scowling, you'll get wrinkles," Levi said calmly before stepping past the red-head, Hanji following in his wake before they stormed into an office, where a blonde man was sniffing a wig om a shoulder-length mannequin. He looked up and Hanji felt their breath catch in their throat, Mike's eyes ping through them and rendering them vulnerable,  just like Erwin had.

"I wanted her dead, not alive Levi"

Oh, that was a story for another day.

Mike brought out a gun and pointed it towards the brunette, the safety pulled and his fingers poised to shoot.

Springing into action Hanji threw their hands up and stood in front of Levi.

"I'm here to transfer agency, any information you want about Erwin Smith, I would be more than happy to indulge"

Noticing the blonde handler's eyes light up, he placed the gun down and offered Hanji a wide-toothed grin, extending a hand which they shook cautiously.

"Welcome to the team, Zoe."

Oh, this was to be an adventure.
