Chapter 2
The next day Des had to fly back to Detroit, where Emery used to live. Emery drove her out to the Pasadena Airport; Emery now lived in a small town an hour away. As they passed the outskirt of Pasadena heading downtown, Desirae pointed to the arena the concert had been in. The arena was only forty-five minutes away from the town. Des smiled and lightly squeezed Emery’s hand that she was holding. Emery kept the other hand on the wheel. Emery smiled too but her thoughts slipped to that girl who had helped her. What was her name?
“Scar,” Emery muttered to herself as she remembered.
“What did you say?” Des asked.
“Um, nothing, just, I like this car.” Emery didn’t know why she lied, she didn’t really feel like making Des jealous and ruining their little time left together.
“Oh, yeah me too,” Des smiled and hummed along with the radio. Emery sighed as she pulled into the airport parking lot. They both got out of the car and started unloading Desirae's luggage. Desirae had been staying with Emery’s family for the past few days; she had flown out with them when they moved their stuff. Together they walked into the airport until they got to airport security. Emery and Des turned to each other as they stood off to the side of all the security commotion.
“Well I guess this is goodbye,” Des said with a sorrowful look on her face. Emery could feel tears welling up in her eyes as Des hugged her. Emery couldn’t believe Des was actually leaving. Emery spoke into Desirae’s shoulder as they still embraced.
“Do you have to go?”
“I can’t stay, I really can’t,” Desirae let go of Emery. Emery pulled away and stared at her girlfriend for a few moments. Emery wished that she had at least a few more hours with her. She leaned in a pressed her lips against Desirae’s. Emery suddenly didn’t care if others stared or disapproved. All Emery cared about was Des. Emery wrapped her arms around her waist and pulled her closer. Emery knew in that moment how she really felt about Des and this was probably her last chance to speak her mind.
“Desirae,” Emery pulled away but still had her arms around her girlfriend. Des rolled her eyes at the use of her real name but Emery liked it better than Des, “I think, no, I know, I love you.” Des suddenly tensed up she peeled Emery’s arms off her and took a step back.
“Oh Emery, I’m so sorry,” Des looked like she was telling a toddler her dog just died. She approached Emery with caution and put one hand on her shoulder. “Emery listen, I like you too,” Emery noted Gretchen’s use of like. She didn’t love Emery too. “It’s just, we are going to be so far away from each other,” Emery suddenly knew what this was. It was the break up, the inevitable break up. It’s not you, it’s me, it’s just the distance, if only we were closer, and all that other crap. Emery had heard it before just it had never been said directly too her because she had never dated anyone other than Des. Emery pushed Desirae’s hand off her shoulder.
“I get it Des, its fine, I’ll just go then. Our relationship isn’t worth the struggle of long distance for you. It’s okay, I just thought you cared, obviously you didn’t,” tears were streaming down Emery’s face but now for a different reason than a few seconds earlier. Emery pushed past Des and headed towards the exit.
“Emery wait,” Des said catching her arm.
“Wait for what?” Emery was furious now, “Wait for you to list off more reasons that I’m not good enough for you? I know why I’m not good enough Des. I know that you are out of my league and I know you don’t love me. So you can just get on with your perfect life and forget the year you wasted on me.” People were now gawking at the scene but Emery didn’t care.
