Chapter 5

Emery’s eyes fluttered open to see Scar sleeping whilst wrapped in her arms. It was still dark outside as Emery gently shook Scar awake.

“Huh? What’s going on?” Scar blinked, still groggy after a few moments.

“We must have fallen asleep,” Emery said also still slightly dazed.

“Yeah, this is comfy,” Scar yawned and snuggled closer to Emery who welcomed the cuddling.

“Yeah it is.” Emery said as if she was going to fall back asleep but she didn’t. There was a warning bell going off in her head, something wasn’t right. Emery just couldn’t place it.

“Emery,” Scar muttered sounding even sleepier than Emery.

“Yes Scar,” Emery couldn’t help but close her eyes, this was really comfy. They must have fallen asleep after Scar stopped sobbing because Emery had her arms around Scar as they lay down.

“What time is it?” she asked through another yawn.

“Oh shit!” Emery bolted upright jostling Scar slightly. Scar just rolled over and curled up next to the now sitting Emery.

“What? Just go back to sleep, Emery,” Scar moaned.

“No Scar we gotta wake up, now!” Emery jostled Scar only eliciting more sounds of protest.

“Why?” Scar finally uttered.

“Why? Because it’s one in the morning and you need to drive me home, unless I drive.” Emery was trying not to panic.

“Oh hell no!” she jumped up, “I, and only me, sit in the driver’s seat of The Truck.” Scar said climbing out of the bed of the truck. Emery grabbed their candy and the blanket and followed her.

“Scar,” Emery said once they were in their seats, “What should I tell my parents? I mean my curfew is ten! It’s one AM!” Emery had reached full on panic mode. Scar was suddenly focused; if someone freaked out more than she did she could stay calm. Scar was worried that because she messed up this one time Emery’s parents would deem her a bad influence and then Scar would lose her only friend. So Scar was worried, but Emery had her head in her hands and she was hyperventilating.

“Emery, look at me. Okay? It’s going to all be fine, alright? No, just look at me for a sec,” Scar gently grabbed Emery’s chin and turned her head so they were face to face with Scar leaning over the center console. “Okay, now listen. First of all just stop worrying and breath. Yeah, just breathe for right now. Good. Now repeat after me, ‘Everything will be fine,”

“Everything will be fine,”

“My parents will not be too mad,”

“My parents will not be too mad,”

“Just as long as I listen to Scar, because she knows everything.” Emery laughed and Scar smiled because that was the reaction Scar was going for.

“Whatever,” Emery sighed as took a few more deep breaths.

“So here is what you are going to do. When we get back to your house you will go in through the front door. If you are lucky your parents will be asleep and the door will still be unlocked.”

“My parents would always lock the door before going to bed, but I have a key.” Emery was starting to panic again but she glanced at Scar’s knowing eyes and a strange sort of relief washed over her.

“Good. Anyways, if you are lucky they will be asleep. If you are not so lucky they will be waiting for you there tonight. In any event you will tell them this without batting an eye, ‘I was at Scar’s house and we fell asleep watching a movie. You can ask her parents, but call at a decent hour.’ I will make sure my parents know the plan as well.” Scar started the truck and pulled back onto the dirt road.
