Chapter 3: Because I'm Half-Russian

I arrived at home very late. I had skated for a few hours and I was hungry. And tired. And my feet were full of blisters. Ugh ! Skating was nice but it had some bad sides too.

My knees were blue and black from falling... well gracefully landing on the ice I mean.

Krista had taught me a few things. Well, I already knew what the moves were but she showed me how exactly to do them. I learned very quickly, mastering all my forward three turns during my time on the ice. I got started in the basic scratch spin, both backwards and forward. I tried to do the combination spin but for some reason I couldn't ! Also the double axel was more difficult to do than I thought it was going to be. I sighed in desperation. How long would it take me to land that jump ?

I was confident that with practice and hard-work, I could achieve it all ! And start to go on international competitions before the end of the season ! Cup of Russia, here I come ! Then, maybe I could make it to the National team ?

Krista and I were to meet up again tomorrow night. I hoped my mother would allow me to go. Krista was supposed to teach me the waltz jump ! It was in the axel family so just my luck.

"Mom, I'm home !" I exclaimed.

A frightened woman appeared before me. Her hair was all over the place and her nose was red.

"Anabella Radford ! How dare you !" My mother cried out. Then she began to insult me in Russian. When she did that, it's because she was REALLY angry. It didn't happen often.

Did I mention I was half Russian half American ? Well, I did but I'll say it again. My father is Canadian and my mom, well she's from Russia. That's why she speaks Russian. I'm not fluent in Russian since I've lived in Canada pretty much my whole life but I was still pretty good at it. I just thought that the language was a mess.

Maybe my Russian side was responsable for impressive talent in figure skating ? As I mentionned earlier, it probably is. Aren't all Russians good figure skaters, usually ? I mean, just look at Alina ! Or Evgenia ! Or Yulia !

"I was about to call the police ! Do you know how late it is ? I arrived home and then I noticed you weren't there. You didn't call me. There wasn't any sticky note on the fridge, too. My room was a mess. I was starting to think you stole some of my money to go to Japan forever !"

"Ughh gomen gomen, oka-san," I apologized in Japanese sarcastically. Which I admit was not the smartest thing. She didn't like it much when she couldn't understand what I said.

"You're grounded for the rest of the week, no, the month !"

"What !"

If I was grounded, I couldn't go skating tomorrow.

"Please, mom, don't !"

"Explain to me, where were you ?"

"I was at the ice rink, skating. It's not like I was out of the country, drugged or drunk ! I was simply skating, you can't punish me for that." I smiled confidently.

"I'm not punishing you for skating, I'm mad because you disappeared without a word ! Now, go to your room."

Go where my phone, laptop and secret snack stash were ? Sure mom thanks ! I thought. She's so foolish !

I would need to find a way to go skating tomorrow. If I wanted to be in the National team, I'd have to practice more than that. I mean, I'd have to do triples in stuff, it should take me a few weeks to master them.

I went up to my room and collapsed on my queen sized bed. How I wished it was a bit bigger so it would fit my ego...

It was already nine o' clock. My stomach began to howl for food so I guessed that meant I was hungry. After opening my secret snack stash, I put together a decent meal, which consisted of cereals, dried fruits, chocolate and some old mint candies. Yum !

I decided to watch some anime before I'd go to bed.

It was already half past nine. I should go to bed after one episode.

20 minutes later

Or two.

Forty minutes later

Or three.

Two hours later

Or maybe... I could just watch the whole season ?...
