Chapter Ten
Elise pulled up outside David’s house. It stood alone on an extensive corner plot, with four Georgian Bay windows staring out from each of the three floors. He really has done well for himself. His BMW was in the drive and a light was on in a downstairs windows. She sat for a while, should she tell him? Deep in thought she jumped at the knock on the window. Goose bumps rose up her arms and a frission of shock spread through her, followed by laughter as she saw David pulling monster faces from outside the car.
“Are you stalking me?” he asked, a flicker of concern shadowed the azure of his eyes.
Does he believe that? No. She laughed, he could see she was worried and his usual response was to come to the rescue. David was so easy going, so generous and helpful. She had been right coming here. “You caught me, the stalker.”
“Come in. Let me get you a drink.” He opened the door with a flourish and offered her a hand to help her from the car.
Elise felt so at home with David, he wanted nothing from her and she could always relax around him, could just be herself. He guided her into the house. It was beautifully decorated, in rich warm brown tones with just the right amount of cream to prevent it being too somber, but somehow it looked empty. There were very few personal items, only a couple of photos. One was of her and David at graduation, happy and smiling as they congratulated each other. He caught her looking at it. “We made a great couple, didn’t we? That picture reminds me what a wonderful time we had.”
Elise sat on the leather corner sofa and relaxed back. “I could kill a small wine, but just one, I’m driving.”
“Your wish is my command.” He left the room arriving back with a large glass of dry white wine.
Elise raised her eyebrows.
“You can get a taxi, or stay the night.” He winked.
Elise felt a sliver of electric warm her stomach. She grabbed the glass and took a drink, savoring the sharp tang as it slid down her throat and warmed her stomach. Leaning back into the sofa she kicked off her shoes and curled her legs under. She closed her eyes and without thinking she was spilling her guts about Joel. A shudder racked her shoulders and tears seeped from her eyes and slid down her cheeks. She felt a hand on her arm and then David was pulling her too him. Stroking her hair and rocking her gently against his muscular chest. She sobbed against him, gradually controlling herself. She raised her head, color flushed her cheeks, she should not have done that. She pulled herself free. “Sorry. I don’t know what came over me.”
“What are friends for?” He refilled her wine glass. “You are staying the night, and we will... We can play chess like we used to, remember?”
She felt a smile slip onto her face, they had loved chess and had spent hours playing, often falling asleep with the board between them.
