Elise woke slowly, luxuriating in between sleep and consciousness. She could feel the sun on her face and the silky softness of the silk sheets. Silk sheets? Her eyes shot open and took in her surroundings, black and white striped wallpaper covered the top half of the room, the bottom half was black stained wood, with a black carpet flecked with white that looked like stars under a hunter’s moon. In the full length mirror she could see Joel, his back to her pulling on his shirt. The heat of a blush flushed her body and into her face as she remembered the sight of them making love in those mirrors. Had he know about them when he choose this room? Had he been watching her while they made love? Or had he just ordered any room? He turned towards her and she pulled the covers tight around her chin.
“Morning sleepy head,” he said a mischievous smile on his face.
“Morning.” What do I do now?
“I have time for a quick breakfast and then I’m off on my yacht for the day.”
Elise felt a thrill of joy, a romantic day on his yacht, sailing out from where, the Thames, it would be chilly but oh so romantic. “That’s great. I will need to go home and change.”
His face dropped. “Sorry lover, but I already have a few friends organized. I don’t think it would be appropriate for you to tag along.” His brow was wrinkled, his smile gone. He buttoned his shirt turning his back. Damn did she think this was... more than sex, did she think it was a relationship?
Elise felt like an ocean of cold water had been thrown in her face. She had saved herself for the right man, and believed that he had been the one, but it was just another notch for his bedpost. She pulled the covers tighter around her shoulders and fought back the tears that threatened to flood her eyes and pour down her cheeks. She would not let him see her cry.
He turned towards her, his face lined with guilt and possibly a touch of shame. He opened his mouth to speak, but for the first time ever she could see doubt in his eyes. He rubbed a hand through his hair, raking it away from his face and gave her a weak smile.
Joel searched her face. She was no longer the confident business woman who laughed at his every attempt to seduce her. She was shy, shamefaced even. He thought back over their encounter, she had been an enthusiastic love maker, caught up with the passion but she was inexperienced. He felt his jaw drop open. She had told him once that sex was not something to be given on a casual basis and that the modern woman, waited for the right man. He slapped his forehead hard, she had been a virgin.
Elise watched the play of emotions cross his face, followed by him slapping himself hard on the head. She knew she was crimson with shame. This had just been another fling for him, nothing special. She should have known. He was always with a different woman all she had been to him was a challenge. What should she do now? He moved towards her his hand held out, concern washed over his face and he rubbed his left ear, something she had noticed him do whenever there was a difficult decision.
Elise straightened her shoulders and grabbed the covers. “No problem,” she said and plastered a smile on her face. Dragging the covers and picking up her clothes she managed to walk with some dignity to the bathroom. Once inside she shut the door and leant against it as hot salty tears coursed down her face.
A knock on the door disturbed her thoughts. “Elise, let me in. We can talk about this.” His voice wavered slightly through the door.
She swallowed back the tears and cleared her throat. He must never know she was crying. “There’s no need. I’m going to have a shower, so I will let myself out later.” She walked to the shower and switched it on. It was amazing the huge shower head poured out water like an Amazon rain forest. She dropped the sheets and stepped under its current.
“I never knew,” he said from outside the door. “I’m sorry. I never would have done this if I realized you were a... well you know... a virgin.”
Elise stood under the pounding spray of the shower. Hoping it would wash away her shame and massage her muscles from tension to a form of peace. Eventually she heard him leave the suite and then she collapsed onto the floor of the shower and let the tears fall.
