Third person's pov:

Dally and Ponyboy arrive at the hospital after being escorted by the cop that pulled them over.

Once the cop is out of sight, they go inside & head to the room Johnny has been staying in since the incident in the church.

It's deathly quiet, the only sound you can hear are the nurses' soft footsteps.

Ponyboy's pov:

We get to the outside of the room, dally goes inside first then me.

I stand on his left side, on the right side of the bed. It was so quiet, I thought we were too late, he was already dead.

Dally- "Hey, hey Johnny. We beat the Socs man, chased them right out of our neighborhood."

Johnny- "Useless, the fighting ain't no good"

Dally- "You know.. they're still writing editorials about you in the paper, you know about being a hero..We're all proud of you buddy it's going to be alright"

There was a moment of silence

Johnny- "Ponyboy"

I hear Johnny call my name quietly, I lean in closer to hear what he's going to say.

Johnny- "Stay gold Ponyboy.. stay, stay gold"

He turns his head so it's laying back on the pillow and stops breathing, his mouth open slightly.

I feel tears threatening to spill out of my eyes. No.. no, not Johnny. he can't die. We can't get along without him.

I don't even pay attention to dallas' reaction, I already knew he was feeling the same way. Johnny was the only thing he ever loved.

Dally- "Johnny come on" he grabs his arm

Dally- "So this is what you get huh, this is what you get for helping people.. punk."

He breaks

Dally- "come on Johnny don't die"

he looks down and covers his eyes with one of hands. Then he looks back up and grabs his arm again

Dally- "come on Johnny don't die on me now.. please" he says the last part softly & cries quietly to himself for a second.

He suddenly gets up and punches the wall

Dally- "bastards" he looks back at Johnny, heartbroken.

I look away from Johnny & look over at him.

Ponyboy- "dallas.."

he looks at me with the same heartbroken look.

Dally- "what?" He voice sounds close to breaking

I slowly & carefully walk over to him and take a breath.

Ponyboy- "I know.. I know this hurts you more than it hurts me. He was our buddy.. but we both know that he wouldn't want you to go because of him.. he would want us to keep living our lives."

He remains silent as he looks at me, listening to what I have to say.

I look over and see the book. I grab it & walk back over to dallas.

I open the book and a slip of paper falls out.

Dallas sees the note

Dally- "what's that?"

I open the paper & see it's a letter from Johnny.

In the note:

Johnny- "Ponyboy, I asked the nurse to give you this book so you could finish it. The doctor came in a while ago but I knew anyway. I keep getting tireder and tireder. Listen, I don't mind dying now. It's worth it. It's worth saving those little kids. Their lives are worth more then mine, they have more to live for. Some of their parents came by to thank me and I know it was worth it. Tell Dally it's worth it. I'm going to miss you guys. I've been thinking about it, and that poem, that guy that wrote it, he meant you're gold when you're a kid, like green. When you're a kid everything's new, dawn. It's just when you get used to everything that it's day. Like the way you dig sunsets, Pony. That's gold. Keep that way, it's a good way to be. I want you to tell Dally to look at one. He'll probably think you're crazy but ask for me. I don't think he's ever really seen a sunset. And don't be so bugged over being a greaser. You still have a lot of time to make yourself be what you want. There's still lots of good in the world. Tell Dally. I don't think he knows.
