Piper Black liked badgers.
Piper Black also liked green.
Piper Black liked solving riddles.
Piper Black stood up for her friends.
So, which house fit Piper Black the best?
Answer: she had literally no clue and she was going to die if it totally rejected her and said that she didn't belong in Hogwarts. She looked at Hazel Gemstone, her new friend whom she had made while on the Hogwarts Express. Would Hazel be disappointed in her if she got kicked out of Hogwarts, sniffling and humiliated? Would she be ashamed to admit that the kaleidoscopic-eyed girl had been her first friend?
No. Hazel wasn't like that. In the few hours Piper had had the privilege of knowing her, Hazel wasn't like that.
But the tall, blonde witch standing beside a sea-green eyed boy certainly was. Piper eyed Annabeth Ravenclaw speculatively. The pure-blood witch had her nose in the air and her robes swept around her majestically, whereas Percy's tie was undone and he had a spot of dirt on his nose. They looked like two polar opposites- Piper didn't know how they'd hit it off so quickly.
'They're so different, you know?' she whispered to Hazel, who seemed to know exactly who she was talking about.
'Maybe that's why they seem such good friends all of a sudden,' offered Hazel. 'My friend back home always said that opposites attract- that was part of the reason why he and I were almost- were best friends.' Her eyes flickered uncertainly on the last sentence, resting firmly on the tall, stern witch in emerald-green robes in front of them. Hagrid had addressed the tall witch as Professor McGonagall, and to put it frankly, she looked absolutely terrifying. Her mouth was set in a grim line and her sharp eyes analysed each of the students, some distastefully and others, like the bushy-haired girl to Piper's left who was muttering something about books and spells, with approval.
The new first-years were standing in a chamber off the hall that the other, older students were currently in, and most of them were hustled together in small groups, chatting nervously about what was going to happen once they entered the Hall. Piper didn't know, herself, but she bet anything that Annabeth did.
'Welcome to Hogwarts,' said Professor McGonagall curtly. 'The start-of-term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your houses. The Sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your house will be something like your family within Hogwarts. You will have classes with the rest of your house, sleep in your house dormitory and spend free time in your house common room.
'The four houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Each house has its own noble history and each has produced outstanding witches and wizards. While you are at Hogwarts, your triumphs will earn you house points, while any rule-breaking will lose house points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points is awarded the House Cup, a great honour. I hope each of you will be a credit to whichever house becomes yours.
'The Sorting Ceremony will take place in a few minutes in front of the rest of the school. I suggest you all smarten yourselves up as much as you can while you are waiting.'
Piper looked at Hazel. 'No offence, but I have an extra hair tie,' she offered. 'Not that I don't like your hair the way it is, but it's going to get in your way.'
Hazel nodded. 'Um, sure, of course. Thanks, Piper. That's really nice of you.' She beamed at Piper, who dug in her robe pockets quickly and pulled out a fistful of sparkly silk ribbons. When Hazel stared at them in shock, Piper grinned, feeling the need to act like she was slightly embarrassed by the whole thing even if she really wasn't.
