Mara.
"No."
"Mara, you're his only hope!"
"No." I said with more emphasis.
"He's going to fail Mathematics without you."
"Let him." I wasn't going to budge.
"Mara, you will get detention if you don't do this."
"Eh. Ms. Lorels just makes me sit and read. I do it everyday, it's not exactly the ideal punishment." It's true. I read everywhere, so detention is more like heaven before school.
"Mara Aliyah Castanello. You will tutor Ky Jennings in History and you will help him pass the class and that is final!" the principal screamed in my face. I rolled my eyes and walked out of her office, to see Ky standing in front of me with his dumb blue eyes staring into my own.
"What do you want?" I grunted.
"I just want to get to know my new tutor." He smirked, his dark brown hair flopping into his face. He pushed it back with one hand. Oh, the classic gesture that girls fall in love with. Jock Ky Jennings, and his perfect blue eyes, and perfect brown hair, and perfect tan skin, with a perfect, triangular beauty mark next to the bridge of his nose. He probably has every girl at the palm of his hand. Well, all of them but me.
"I'm not tutoring you." I lied.
"These walls aren't as thick as they look, Mandy."
"It's Mara, and unlike you, I'm smart enough to get myself out of anything." I pushed a loose strand of my black hair out of my face.
"And pretty enough, too." He put his hands on the wall, next to my face, trying to cage me in.
"Get a grip, Jennings." I rolled my eyes and pushed him hard. Clearly not expecting that response, he stumbled and hit his back against the opposite wall.
I turned on my heel and walked down the hallway, smirking as I felt his gaze follow me out.
"And she did it again!" Kent said as soon as I walked out of the front office. Here's a little background on Kent: we met last year in the yearbook club my mom practically dragged me into and immediately clicked. He had no friends, I had no friends. He was depressed, I was depressed. Why not?
"Did what?" I asked, hearing my black combat boots clicking on the floor next to the shuffle of Kent's vans.
"Successfully avoided Ky Jennings. He's been staring at you for the past month, you know."
"He can stare all he wants. I don't give a crap. I'd rather not be 'that sophomore he hooked up with at a party'." I scoffed, trying to cover my anxiousness up. Ky's lips had been an inch away from mine. I could've killed him right there. Kent doesn't know about my 'curse'. No one except my parents do, really.
"The sass is real." Kent said, his green eyes sparkling.
"Indeed it is, Kent." We kept on walking towards the cafeteria, where yearbook club is held. Our school isn't relatively big, so every club without a sponsor was held in the cafeteria. Not very high school musical, I know.
"Hi Mara!" Piper the petite, said. That was her nickname everyone used behind her back. She had repeated sophomore year and is currently a senior, nineteen years of age, and a meager four feet, ten inches tall. Her strawberry blonde curls bobbed up and down as she ran up to me.
"Hi Pet- Piper." I responded.
"I need you to send me those pictures from the winter formal, pronto." She said poking my loose, purple tank top.
"About that..."
"Don't tell me you sent Adam again." Piper raised an eyebrow.
"It was the season premiere!" I whined.
"That's not an excuse for ditching your responsibilities, Mara!"
"Come on Pipes-"
"Mara, I know you don't like the human species, and Kent and I are the only people you tolerate, but you have to grow a pair and socialize." She cut me off.
"Who said I tolerated you?" I replied, raising both eyebrows. I immediately felt bad, knowing that Piper was only trying to help. "I'm sorry."
"It's fine. Just please tell Adam to send me the photos." She sighed and spun on her heel, walking away to shout more orders at the five other people in yearbook club. Don't ask why I'm still in this club. I wonder why, too.
"So Mara, when's your first tutoring session with douche face?" Kent asked.
"Ugh, on Wednesday."
"But that's my day!" He whined. Every Wednesday we go to D-lites right after school and get two scoops of ice cream and share it.
"I know, I tried to reschedule, but that was the only day the little prick didn't have soccer practice."
"Screw soccer and it's torturous ways." Kent replied miserably.
"I don't know, I kinda like watching soccer."
"Take that back you horrid monster!" he said, appalled.
"Moron."
"Jerk."
Hi guyssss! I really hope you like the idea of the story, since this is a really sucky chapter. I'm terrible at introductions. Anyway, thanks for reading!
