I snarled my own teeth as one wolf darted towards me, stopping when they received a growl from one of the other wolves. We stood face to face, our invisible boundary line separating us from killing one another. I was severely outmatched, and took a step back, assessing my odds at running past them. No matter how fast I was, they would stop me and not spare me before I got passed.
Seeing the only choice as being to speak to them, I dipped my head and let the change wrack through my body. My bones cracked loudly as the other wolves merely watched, before one stepped forward and began to do the same.
I stared him fully in the eye when he eventually stood, both of us unclothed and seething. He spoke first, "Why is one of yours on our territory? Where if your Alpha?" The wolves behind him bristled, taking a step closer to the man.
"You're looking at her," I announced loudly, the man looking shocked at my statement. "I am Alpha Mia of Nivalis Pack, daughter of Francis and Greg Rivers." The wolves hushed at the mention of my father, looking to the man for lead.
I could see the man itched to know about Mick but knew he would have to wait for the gathering, and if he knew my father he didn't show it. "I am Beta to the Ardens pack, and still I ask; Why can I scent your pack on our land?"
"One of ours went missing, I'm not sure where or why but I lost his scent here. It is of the utmost importance that I locate him as soon as possible and bring him back," I looked him evenly in the eye, showing no fear for what was out there that may have taken Sam but itching to run past them.
"You will come with us to our Alpha and he will decide what we will do from there," the man dipped his head and began to change, not leaving anything up for discussing. I cursed internally, knowing that we were wasting time like this but not wanting to give rise to suspicion to hostility or suspicion.
This was the first time I had been on the Ardens' territory, and everything I walked past smelt foreign, even the familiar oak trees had a different scent to them. soon enough we reached what must've been their pack house, enveloped in thick leafy trees and no paths leading to it.
It was huge and covered in windows, very open and vulnerable which was strange for a pack of this notoriety. When we had reached the doors, two wolves stood in front of me as the man I had spoken to changed and went inside. Impatience prickled at my fur, everything was taking too long! I had no way of telling if Sam was in danger and these wolves didn't seem to care.
I stared one of the wolves in the eye, sizing them up as they let out a soft growl. Even though I was bigger than them, I knew that these wolves were trained to kill and shouldn't underestimate them. Eventually the man came back outside and handed me a pair of jeans and white tank top, "Our Alpha is out but his son will speak with you."
I nodded and began to change back, pulling on the loose clothes he had given me before following him into the house. Everything was just as white and modern as the outside, and there were no pack members in sight, silence welcoming me inside. we reached two thick wooden doors which he pushed aside easily and let me in, shutting them tightly behind me.
I was met by two stone cold eyes, watching my every move as he held his hands behind his back. "You're not Alpha Mick," he stated in an even tone, not relaxing up his taut posture. He looked to be a few years older than myself, tanned with dark brown hair messily pushed to the side. From the way he looked, he knew he was good looking and probably got all the girls.
I mentally rolled my eyes, scoffing at his hard exterior, "I'm the new Alpha, Alpha Mia."
"What happened Mick?" He asked, far more curious than the other man who held back senseless questions.
I shook my head, crossing my arms as I answered, "I don't need to answer your questions, I came here for other reasons. Who are you? I haven't seen the 'Alpha's son' at any of our gatherings?"
"I'm Caleb, I was trained in a different country, returning now in my father's old age," he raised an eyebrow at me, "So why have you come into my territory then?"
"I came into your father's territory," I placed emphasis on 'father's' which he frowned at, "Because one of my pack members went missing and his scent goes into your territory. I need permission to enter and come looking for him."
"We'll have to wait for my father to do that then," Caleb answered, his face set stone hard, "He shouldn't be gone long, two hours, maybe three."
I let out an angry hiss of breath through my teeth, narrowing my eyes at him, "Phone him, my pack mate could be in danger if I don't get to him as soon as possible." When he made no move towards the phone that sat on the desk, I tried harder, "Phone him right now, or I go without it."
Caleb took a menacing step closer, fists clenched at his sides in clear anger at being told what to do, "You don't get to come into my territory and tell me what to do." He growled, shaking his head as he took another step closer. Refusing to be intimidated, I took a step closer to him.
"If you let my pack mate die," I hissed at him angrily, "There will be another war your pack can't afford to lose, again."
He was now standing inches away from my face, staring me straight in the eye even though he towered over me from the height difference. "You have made a big mistake," Caleb growled, reaching for my wrist. As his fingers closed around my flesh and made contact, sparks flashed across our skin.
Time seemed to stop as I glared into his eyes, my facial features beginning to soften into confusion and then horror as I realized what was actually happening. His breathing slowed as his eyes widened, but there was no time for confusion as he grabbed me by the waist and pinned me agains the doors. As I realized what was about to happen, his now pointed canines inches from my exposed collar bone, I pushed him back roughly and fell to the floor as he released me.
His breaths came out ragged as his lifted his dipped head to look me in the eye. "What... the hell... was that?" I exclaimed between breaths, shaking at how close he had come to marking me as his mate. I lifted a hand to my collarbone, just to make sure there was on blood or mark and was relived to find none.
Caleb got up to his feet, shaking in rage and close to the change, but didn't say a word. Instead, he disappeared through a single door next to the desk without another word, slamming it behind himself. In seconds I heard a howl form outside the window, making no move to investigate as I turned to face the double doors. My mind stalled at the idea of Caleb as a mate and I growled, remembering of Sam. There was not time to waste and this future Alpha had just wasted a lot of it.
I pushed them open myself, erupting the other side to find the Beta I had spoken to at the border sitting on a chair outside the room. Nervously I looked at him and he shook his head, giving no indication that he had heard anything that had gone inside between us.
"Lets go look for your pack mate," he said, leading me outside the house silently. Once outside, the four others wolves from the border joined up with us, heads tipped to the side in question.
"We are going to find a member of the Lapsus pack, do not harm him if you find him but change and tell him of what has happened," he looked to me and I nodded before he opened his mouth to speak again, "If he resists, treat him as a trespasser."
I looked at him, wide eyed as the other wolves set off, "Treat him like a trespasser?"
"That is what he is," the beta replied, "Let's hope he doesn't resist." He looked at me cruelly before running off in the tree line, leaving me alone to change. Shaking I removed my clothes and changed, running off in hopes to find him before they did. I knew I was getting close when I began to scent him on all the bushes he had brushed past.
Quickly I took off, following the strongest scent and eventually came up alongside the river that ran through all four territories. I followed it nervously, and thats when I saw it.
A vampire sitting over Sam.
