IT WAS A FRIDAY AFTERNOON, IN MID OCTOBER. Phoebe had walked up to Summer, who was standing at her locker grabbing her books. "Summer." She said in a sing-song voice, causing Summer to look at her. "You're invited to my annual Halloween Sleepover." This was true. Every year before Halloween Phoebe's parents would have to visit Penelope's parents, and Phoebe would have a three day sleepover with her best friends. This year was no different. Summer playfully rolled her eyes at Phoebe. "I'll be there Fifi. I'm always there."

Phoebe walked into History class and took her seat in front of Jack and Auggie. Phoebe pulled out her history binder, and her history textbook, along with the two  envelopes, she had in her book bag. She turned around and looked at Jack and Auggie. She placed the envelopes on their desks before telling them about her sleepover.

_____________

THE THREE FRIENDS, WHO WERE INVITED TO THE SLEEPOVER, stood outside the two story house, that belonged to the Quinn family. The Halloween decorations were already set up and it was cool. Summer, already having been to the house many times, bounded up to the door, and rang the doorbell. After about five seconds the sound of barking, could be heard. "Sprinkles, shh. It's okay." Phoebe told her dog as the door opened. The friends glanced down at the small puppy. After lettin her friends in Phoebe led them through the house. "The only adult here, is my grandmother Rose." Phoebe told them as they quietly walked by the guest room. A short woman sat on the bed knitting. "Nana Rose." Phoebe called to her. "My friends are here."

"Okay. Have fun dear." The woman said cheerfully.

The children walked downstairs to the kitchen. "So we've got, crackers, chips, candy, cookies, cake, cereal, fruit, sandwiches, and I think we have juice boxes." Phoebe listed off. While Summer went to get a snack, Auggie and Jack stood at the door of the kitchen. Phoebe and Summer shared a playful annoyed look, before they walked over to the boys and grabbed them by their wrists and pulled them to the island. Phoebe jumped up on the island and sat in her normal spot.

You see her mother, used to scold her for sitting on the counters or the island. But over time she stopped trying. Phoebe was sat in between Auggie and Jack's stools.
"So, Fifi." Summer started, as she sat down on another stool. "What is your mom doing this year?"

Phoebe shrugged and responded without thinking. "I don't know Summs, probably to give my dad divorce papers." She rolled her eyes as she thought about the man.

"Sorry Fifi, I didn't know." Summer exclaimed softly. She rushed up to hug her best friend, who had unshed tears in her eyes. The girl excused herself and rushed up to her room. Summer gave Jack a look, one that practically said go talk to her. And so he did.

Jack walked down the hallway on the second floor, the hallway had six doors. Each of them had a different colored sign on them. Mommy and Daddy's room -though the daddy was scribbled out in black sharpie.- Allison's room -the paper sign that was stuck to the door, was fading, like it was old.- Bathroom. The signs on the next two doors were unread-able. The very last door, was Phoebe's. The orange sign, was decorated with hearts and peace signs. He gently opened the door to see Phoebe, in the spot she and her mother sometimes cry together in. She sat in a teal been bag chair, hugging a small wolf stuffed animal to her chest. "You know, my mom she uh, bought me this wolf the week that my sister, Allison ran away. I was a sad little three year old that missed her big sister." Jack was silent as he listened. "When my dad left, he told my mom that I was too different. That I would ruin my families reputation." Jack was curious so he mumbled a quick, "Why." Of course Phoebe didn't want anyone to know about her dislexia, or her anxiety. But for some reason Phoebe felt herself tell the 10 year old boy who sat next to her. "I have dislexia and anxiety. My mom had anxiety too, but I was the first to have dislexia in my entire family. And I guess that's what made me different. My mom told me that it wasn't my fault he left. Obviously I'm not good enough for her to tell me the truth." The tears that had been threatening to spill had. She began to cry involuntarily. Jack sighed as he hugged her softly and told her it was alright.

_____________

WHEN PENELOPE CAME HOME THE NEXT MORNING SHE SAW MANY THINGS. She saw Phoebe and Summer laying on the couch with a large blanket covering them, with many stuffed animals and pillows surrounding them. She also saw Jack and Auggie on the floor, sleeping soundly. Penelope also didn't fail to see the dried tear stains that were evident on her daughter's face. She sighed before clapped and said, "Let's go kids, we don't have all day. I have three kids who need to be ready for their parents to pick them up in an hour." And like that three of the four kids got off the couch and ran to collect their belongings. Phoebe blinked softly as her eyes adjusted to the light. "Hey mom." She said.

"Phoebe I have an announcement..." and those five words, were the start of a change in the Quinn girls' life.
