We walk towards the helicopter as the rain starts to fall. We grabbed the few things that we wanted to carry with us to their base across town. We have all gotten pretty close during theses few hours. Turns out Kade's family established the base, and they have them all around the country for natural disasters. Jackson has not left Kade's side since he got here, I can tell he admires him. Gabbi acts like he's her big brother and she's hung out with him everyday for years. Ada giggles at every joke he makes, he found a spot on the side of her tummy that makes her giggle every time. The thunder rumbles the and the ground shakes, Ada jumps and grabs on to Kade. He picks her up and smiles at her.
"Don't worry Ada Bear, it's only my tummy, I'm hungry for a little snack...."
He licks his lips. He tickles her and makes her laugh, she jumps out his arms and runs away to catch up with Bella and The Twins. Kade is really good with kids, he must have siblings of his own.
He looks up at me as we walk towards the helicopter. I pull an escaped curl behind my ear as we stare at the rubble that was once our home. I look for a little while longer as I close my eyes, I'm kinda hoping this is a dream and that when I open my eyes this would be my house and not a pile of rubble. My hands shake and I feel as if my knees are turned into jelly as my heart races and my breathing shallows.
Suddenly I'm pulled into a soft warm embrace. I open my eyes to see a dark blue jacket, Kade. I stand there in his arms, it's kind of weird that I'm letting him hug me. He's a random guy I just met, but I am literally desperate for any love I can get right now. After the hug I almost feel recharged, I have a new pep in my step. I turn around to look at Kade, he's rubbing the back of his neck.
"I'm sorry about that. I know that after a disaster like this a lot of people just need a good hug." he smiles sheepishly at the end, his cheeks red.
"Thank You." I say as we hop into the helicopter. This sounds pretty corny but, I think this is gonna be the start of a good friendship...
I wake up to an all too familiar feeling, falling. I sit up and see fire lots and lots of fire. Bella is frantically pressing controls and yelling things into her radio. The kids are up now, I look around and find Kade. I look down to see that I was just drooling on his rain jacket.
"It's fine, it's a rain jacket wet stuff is supposed to get on it." He smiles at me reassuring me that it's okay. For a split second I forgot that we were plummeting to the ground. I looked back at Bella who was putting on a parachute. She tossed one to me and one to Kade. She then hands Gabbi two backpacks, wraps her arms around her and jumps. I hear Gabbi screaming over the fire, rain, and thunder.
Ada looks over the edge and then looks at me and Kade, she plops her little butt onto the floor of the helicopter. I look at her with annoyance, Kade clicks the parachute onto my back. He then ties the two backpacks around Ada's waist, he does the same to Jackson and Himself. I wrap my arms around Ada and squeeze my eyes shut, Kade looks over at me and nods.
"You can do this Mabel, after 50 seconds pull the string to activate the parachute." Then he jumps, I watch as I see him and my little brother fly through the clouds.
Why are you always last Mabel? Are you really gonna get you and Ada hurt, or even worse killed because you got scared. JUST JUMP!!!
I jump out the helicopter, with my eyes closed, which is probably not a good idea. I hear noises coming from up above, I see the helicopter explode right before my eyes. I feel the heat on my back as it does so and I shield Ada from any debris as we fall.
