The Broken Son

Growing up, there was always something different about him. At a glance one would suspect, without even knowing him, that he did not belong, that he was not a true son of Odin. Where his supposed parents had lighter hair and gently tanned skin he possessed raven locks which contrasted against his snow-like flesh. Even his brother whose stockish and hard build held more power than both of their parents combined looked more like them than he did. As if his far too slender frame, hair, and skin was not enough to set him apart from the rest of his family one might note that even his eyes were wrong. Where the rest of his family possessed shining blue eyes he had sharp green eyes which pierced the air dangerously even in childhood. He did not look like them and they did not look like him, he was not one of them.

Whether it was the cause of feeling isolated from his family from a young age or plain genetics, he, the black sheep of Odin's otherwise perfect family, found himself constantly getting himself into trouble. He found he possessed an incredible talent for spinning tall tales and manipulating others with sharp, untrue words. In the end his schemes concluded with scolding and punishment but it was attention and so he loved every minute of it. It was in this manner that he discovered the truth of his situation, he could never be the perfect son, Thor had already taken that position and he knew he'd never be able to beat him in that aspect. If he wanted to receive anywhere near the same amount of attention Thor got he'd have to become his polar opposite. It was at that point that he turned from a compliant and gentle child to a destructive mess. It started small. He'd go around the palace breaking things here and there but whenever he got caught Frigga argued that he was but a child and that accidents happened. The fact that she cared enough to fight for him was touching but it wasn't enough for him, he needed to show them that he was not a good child, that he needed to be punished, only then would he receive the amount of attention he craved. That was when he stabbed Thor.

He never disliked his brother, as a matter of fact he looked up to him. Thor was never the smartest but he was strong and kinder than most. Whenever he needed someone, whenever he was sick, whenever he was hurt Thor was there. However, his brother was undoubtedly preferred over him by their parents, Odin in particular seemed to care for more for the blonde than he ever would for his dark haired son. This, of course, he never blamed Thor for and perhaps convincing everyone otherwise, convincing them that he hated his blonde counterpart, was the biggest lie he ever told.

From the day he supposedly tried to kill his brother onward he was known as the troublemaker and anything that went wrong in the kingdom somehow was found to be his fault.
