Kale POV

I could not believe that my best friend had betrayed me like that. I did not think he was capable of such hate and rage. He kept it all so well hidden, I was disgusted with myself, I had left him alone with Clarissa many times and never once thought he would hurt her.

Father had promised me that the council would have him imprisoned for a very long time. He had kidnapped Clarissa’s mother, had killed good men and tried to kill Clarissa and myself. Bragg’s father had resigned from his post, even though we had told him that he did no wrong, he was ashamed.

I looked to my side and saw Clarissa’s sleeping form. God she is so beautiful, sometimes I found it hard to comprehend that she was mine and she loved me. I spent so long being an empty shell that I had forgotten what it was like to live. I had purely existed before I met her.

“Mmm…morning” Clarissa said sleepily looking at me, her eyes were still part closed and a smile on her face.

“Morning my Love” I wrapped her in my arms not wanting to let go.

6 Months Later

Clarissa POV

Mother moved in with Gregor a few months ago, their friendship seemed to be doing them both some good. I was happy for them. I had moved into smaller but still very large house with Kale. Things where good, no-one was trying to kill me or take me away from my family.

Kale walked in the door, making me catch my breath always, sweat shone across his tanned face, showing the hard work he had been putting in with the local farmers helping them after horrible dry season ruined their crops. We had had 3 months with no rain, I had tried to use my ability but I could not make it last longer than half an hour and it drained me so much that it would have probably killed me if I pushed it too far.

I walked up to Kale, opening my arms to him and bringing his lips to meet. “I have a surprise for you” I took hold of his hand and put it to my stomach “I’m pregnant” I whispered to him, looking up at him, through my lashes.

“What, I.. I… I’m going to be a dad?” He questioned with happy tears in his eyes and a smile on his lips.

“Yes” I whispered back with an equally happy expression.

This was all I had wanted growing up, a man who loved me and a family of my own. This was finally happening. I could not believe it.

The door to library swung open, Lore ran into the room, gasping for breath “My Lord, you must come quick… It is your father. He was in the garden early this morning and no-one had seen him. We searched and found him in the woods… I am so sorry my Lord, he is dead.” Lore lowered his gaze to the ground. I grabbed Kale for support, his body solid. “There is more.” Lore added “Bragg, he escaped, along with a number of the other prisoners”

“What! When?!” Kale demanded

“Last night, we had been informed when we realised we could not find your Father. There was a note in his breast pocket. It is addressed to Clarissa”

I took the note from Kale and unfolded the paper:

Clarissa,

I hope you liked my handy work… though not all mine, I did have some help. I doubt I could have got his body twisted in all those positions by myself. So, you know I have escaped by now. I do intend to finish what I started, you and you whore of a mother will be dead by hands very soon.

Try to run if you think can… I have ways of finding people or should I say I have people who can find people. Little hint there to help you out.

Anyway must be off, plotting to do… old friends to visit, maim and kill.

I WILL see you soon, trust me on that
