The blaring ring of the school bell blasted against the walls creating a ripple of noise, walking with my head down towards my locker; kids pushing past me with their friends laughing at something one of them had said.
I see Kelsie talking to Carly; a girl I've known since freshman year, when I say known I mean I've never actual spoken to her. Kelsies eyes avert away from Carly's loud presence and scans the hall, her eyes meet mine and her face forms a smile and her eyes glisten in the artificial light of LED lightbulbs. She waves her hand indicating for me to come over to her but I shake my head; i still send a smile back to her though.A frown clouds her perfect face as she rotates herself back to Carly, who hadn't even noticed she looked away. I could see Kelsie's mouth moving and points in my direction, I twist to face my locker and start to open it using my locker code; once it's open I pretend I'm looking for something and strain my ears to listen in on their conversation.
"What's up with him?"
"Oh, that's Oliver he doesn't talk; like ever" Carly replies in a bored manner as if she's told the story a thousand times.
"What do you mean?" Kelsie's voice fills with curiosity,
"I mean he doesn't talk quite literally, not in three years; that's when his mom passed and ever since... mute" the sadness is there in her voice like it is every time she tells someone or they bring it up.
Me and Carly used to be close, she'd be the only other person I'd speak to on a regular basis (my dad whenever he'd call to), but once my mom died as I've said before, I switched off."Really? Mute, for three years? And he still doesn't speak now?"
"Unfortunately not" Carly seems to be in a state of her own, I know she still cares for me as every year I receive a card from her on my birthday and she smiles at me in the hallways.
"Umm, that's strange" Kelsie seems like she's having a conscious battle with herself.
"Why?"
"He spoke to me"...
Carly looks at her in shock, devastation and betrayal. She shifts her eyes to me which I lock them with mine.
