I was so peacefully lost in my dreams when my phone rang, waking me up from sweet slumber. Damn, it felt like I haven't slept in ages, it was so good. I looked at the caller ID - Caroline...huh... at this time? We didn't even have school today, what is she calling for so early?
"Hello? Caroline?" I picked up, slightly worried.
"Hey Seraphina... did I wake you? I'm so sorry... it's just. This has not been a good week for me and....." She sounded like she was about to cry, "I just need to talk to someone else for a change. Could we meet up please? I feel so confused and I could really do with your advice...."
"Sure, honey just tell me when and where" What are best friends for? I should've asked her before, I could tell she was stressed. Ending the call, I began to get ready for the day. She wanted to go for a drive and have breakfast on the way.. and I know just the thing to cheer her up!
An hour and a half later, we were seated at this incredibly cute cafe just outside Mystic Falls which Caroline assured me I would fall in love with soon enough. Based on the milkshake they served, I was pretty sure I would too. It was hard to take my focus off of the delicious looking waffles the waitress just left in front of me, but I turned to her and asked, " So, ready to talk now?"
She nodded hesitantly, biting her lip, deliberating.
"You can talk to me about anything Caroline, I'm here to help. I won't judge, you're the best person I know here!" I smiled encouragingly. I could guess this was somehow related to the love-triangle thingy going on with her, Matt and Tyler. I still don't know about the Stefan angle.
"I don't even know where to start..." she sniffled. "I know I shouldn't tell anyone but... I just can't deal with this alone anymore!"
I waited, a worried look on my face.
"It's... Okay, Seraphina, how do you feel about.. vampires?"
Wait, did I hear correctly? Did she just say vampires?
"Or, you know, witches, werewolves... that sort of..."
"Caroline. I thought this was about you! I thought it was about Matt and Tyler or your mom or maybe even Stefan... you're talking about vampires?" I asked, confused. Was she changing the topic? Did she decide not to trust me? I couldn't help the tiny twinge of hurt I felt inside... I thought we could share our secrets with each other.
"No, no... I'll get to that later. I promise. I just need to know this teeny tiny detail. Do you believe in the supernatural?", she looked at me earnestly. I couldn't tell if she was being funny.
"Umm.... I guess not..? I mean, I'm a big fan of Fantasy fiction and I wish those stories were true... like Hogwarts and magic.... but... it's not real..." She kept staring, biting her lip again. "Okay, okay, I guess they could be true, but for the sake of avoiding nightmares, I hope they aren't. What about it now?"
"Alright so..." rubbing her eyes tiredly she said, "I'll start with the whole Matt-Tyler fiasco...
"As you know, I was going out with Matt before... well, I changed somehow. I got involved with something he can't be. And Tyler became part of that thing too, so he needed my help because he was all alone. It was dangerous and we had to keep it a secret and Matt got worried but I couldn't tell him so... we fought and... we've been avoiding each other still," she exhaled. I nodded, "Go on."
"Tyler, in the meantime, was aware of only part of the situation. Actually... he had an uncle, who was involved in the same thing Tyler is, but something went wrong, he got involved with the wrong people and... he died a while back."
