Two months earlier - they day she met luke hemmings

The room was full of people dressed in suits and tight dresses, speaking business and laughing together about past experiences. Everyone seemed to know each other, all apart from Sapphire who knew no one but her dad and Stewart, her dad's pervy co-worker. She stuck to her dad's side all night, sipping champagne and trying to make sense of their business talk but it all sounded like gibberish. To say she was bored would be an understatement.

"Sapphire, go find someone to talk to and stop hanging around me like a bad smell." Her dad whispered desperately to her once the group of possible business partner's were no longer in earshot.

"I don't know anyone." She mumbled, still blatantly angry at him for even making her come to this stupid party in the first place.

"Well get to know someone!" He said, rolling his eyes at her stubbornness. Her eyes scanned the crowd for some possible company for the night but no one her age was to be seen. In fact, no one there even looked under the age of thirty.

"Like who? They're like twice my age." She groaned, putting on a typical teenage girl whiny voice.

"I don't care Sapphire. You're seventeen years old and you're hanging around your dad like you're five." His words were harsh and they were meant to be. He didn't like his daughter hanging around him while he spoke business.

"I didn't even want to come in the first place but I did for you! I don't know why I even bothered!" She shouted, shoving her drink in his chest and storming off. She was completely aware of all the eyes that had turned in their direction but ignored them and let her dad deal with them. She was fuming. He was the one that more or less forced her to come tonight and now he was having a go at her.

She pushed her way through the many guests and through a door that led her out of the room and into a hallway. After the door was closed, she let out the biggest sigh that almost caused all the breath in her body to be released.

"Asshole." She mumbled under her breath. She kicked off the heels that she'd been wearing all night - the ones her dad had forced her to wear because apparently her vans weren't appropriate. She slung them to the side of the hall, not bothering to look where they landed because she was not putting them on again tonight. or ever.

She started walking down the hall that was in front of her. It was long and had paintings covering the walls. They were random paintings that you wouldn't expect to find in a grand house like this one. She started to study them. Looking at each one for a little while as there wasn't much else to do apart from go back out to the party which was the last thing she wanted. She stopped at one that had penguins on it. For one reason or another, this one fascinated her the most and she found it highly amusing that her father - the most serious and strict man in the country - had a painting of penguins in his home.

"Did you know you can see penguin's poop from space?"

She flinched and turned to see where the smooth, Australian voice was coming from. She was stunned to see a young boy, that looked to be her age, standing behind her and staring straight into her eyes.

"Excuse me?" She questioned, imaging the look she had on her face that was a mix behind confused and freaked out. This boy had popped out of no where and the first thing he says was a useless fact about Penguin's poop.

"Scientists have proven it, you know. So don't go telling me I'm a liar." He told her with a goofy grin that scared her even more. Who was this guy?

"I-I wasn't going to." She stuttered. Her eyelids quickly flickered and she looked away from his strong gaze, his blue eyes being the only thing that made her sure this crazy boy was real.

"They're great, don't you think?" He asked. He must have noticed how confused she was as he chuckled and nodded towards the painting, "Penguins."

"Oh, er, yeah I guess." She shrugged, more interested in trying to think of a reason she could escape from this boy then what he was saying to her. She was convinced he had ran away from a mental home and was here to kidnap her and talk her into robbing the bank of London or something crazy like that.

"What the hell am I on about?" He started laughing hysterically which Sapphire had to admit was a beautiful sound and she found herself fighting a smile,"You don't know who the hell I am and I start talking about penguins."

She couldn't help but agree. He was starting to freak her out with his sudden change in personality and wondered if he was schizophrenic. However she couldn't take her eyes off him as he threw his head back in laughter because of the way his eye lit up and made them even more mesmerizing.

"I'm Luke," He said once he had finished laughing but the smile was still there, "Luke Hemmings."

She stared down at his outstretched hand, wondering if she should accept his polite greeting. What seventeen year old greets other people their age with a hand shake?

"Sapphire." She hesitantly locked her hand with his and gave it a small shake. He grinned sheepishly as their hands separated, "Like the gemstone."

"My mother named me that because of my eyes but yeah, I guess it's because of gemstone." She nodded, giggling at how ridiculous he looked with his grin that just grew - if that was possible - when she giggled. He couldn't deny how adorable he found it.

"So, Sapphire, how come you're in here and not out there?" He asked, bringing the glass, that Sapphire hadn't noticed he was holding, to his lips and gulping some down. She couldn't stop herself from rolling her eyes when the party was mentioned and he noticed.

"Just getting some space." She lied. She wasn't prepared to pile on her problems onto a stranger. One she wasn't too sure was sane at that. Luke caught on and respected that she didn't want to talk about whatever reason and left it.

"I don't blame you." He laughed. Luke had been just as bored as Sapphire.

"What do you mean?" She asked, looking round at him and waiting for his answer although she had a feeling it would be bad and something she didn't want to hear.

"Well, it's not exactly the most exciting place to be. And the guy who owns this place is completely up his own arse, he looks like he's had a stick shoved up it." He laughed loudly, expecting Sapphire to laugh too but he got not response. He thought she was the type of girl to have a sense of humour but stopped laughing as he saw her face almost turn red.

"That 'guy' happens to be my dad," She hisses and his eyes go wide, "You jerk!"

She grabbed her heels from the side and shoved past him, wanting to be out of his company even more than before. Luke started to panic, trying to think of what to say to her as he didn't want this girl to slip away, especially fuming at him. Before he could think of anything to say, he was hurrying after her.
