unique vs. ridiculous

Don't you just love opening a book and then finding out the character has a name so outrageous that you just can't continue reading? Yeah, me too. I get you want a character with a one-of-a-kind name, but using names like Apple and Viviannaaheigh is not the way to go.

Make sure your name isn't spelled too outrageously, and is spelled pretty similar to the way it's pronounced. This way, your readers won't fumble every time they see the name, and can instead focus on how good your writing is! While it's okay to stray from the traditional spelling (ex. "Caity" or "Kaytee" instead of "Katie") make sure it's still readable (and not ("Ceighty" or "Kaeyteigh")

That being said, if a super unusual name adds something to your character, and doesn't just detract, go right ahead and use something strange. For example, if your character is the child of two famous fashion designers, they may have a strange or eccentric name like Jupiter or Xerxes. Maybe they were bullied as a child for it and now go by a nickname/ try to hide it. Just make sure a strange name makes sense for your character.

If you still want something unique, but not entirely outlandish, here are some of my favorites!
