"Terrance?" Momo asks as she walks with the teen to his first period. "What was the name the" she pauses, trying to remember the word. "The name the bully called Lewis?" Terrance sighs.
"Do you know what the term transgender means?" Terrance asks, and Momo nods. While uncommon in Japan, she is decently educated in what the LGBT community is. She has to be, as she herself identifies as bi.
"Well 'tranny', what Connor - the bully - called Lewis, is an offensive term for someone who's trans. Last week, people found out that Lewis transitioned a few years ago, when he was twelve. All I know is that he had some nasty gender dysphoria."
"Dysphoria?" Momo asks, not having heard the word before.
"It's uh- complicated" Terrence says, scratching his head awkwardly. "From what I understand, he was severely uncomfortable in his biological gender, especially when puberty hit. That's about as much as I understood, but I'm sure there's more." Momo nods, having understood the general idea.
"Here we are, first period: American History II." Terrence announces, walking inside. Not long after walking in, a dark-haired classmate of Terrence's walks in.
"Now is the time to seize the day!" He exclaims in the doorway.
"Now is the time to seize the day!" Terrence echoes enthusiastically. "Spend yesterday watching Newsies on Netflix again, Charlie?"
"You know it!" Charlie agrees. "Gonna introduce me to your friend?"
"Give a guy a minute" Terrence teases. "Charlie, this is Momo. She moved here from Japan a couple months ago, but only started school here today. Momo, this is Charlie, they're nonbinary."
"Bonjour" Momo greets with a small how and a smile.
"Bonjour" Charlie returns the grin. "I hope to see you in French for 3rd period 'cause I'm all alone." The grin still on his face says that he isn't too upset about being alone.
"Brooklyn's here!" Someone shouts from the doorway, receiving a couple claps from fellow students. Momo turns to see Lewis in the doorway, making his way over to their little group.
"Did you get Lew into your musical fandom?" Terrence asks, exasperated, though the tone smile on his face says otherwise.
"Don't be such a downer" Lewis says with a smile.
"I'm not hating, we all know that Charlie's pulled me into about eight different musicals, including Newsies. Just invite me next time, damnit." The bell rings as Terrence finishes, and all of the students scramble for their seats. "This one's empty, you can sit here" Terrence suggests, motioning to the seat to his left. Momo smiles, grateful, and sits down.
At lunch, Momo followed Terrence to a lunch table occupied by Charlie and two girls Momo has yet to meet.
"Momo, this is Julia Peters, she's in my next class period. I don't know who the other is though." Terrence introduces, sitting down next to Charlie.
"I'm Lauren. Charlie invited me to come and sit with you guys today." The unknown girl introduces herself.
"All of last week, she was sitting alone" Charlie explains. "We're in fourth period together so I invited her to sit with us today."
"Welcome to the cult" Lewis says, sitting down next to Momo, surprising her. "Anyway, we're going to talk about me now." Everyone but Lauren and Momo laugh at this, as if it were a regular occurrence. They'll soon learn that it is. Lauren smiles though, amused by Lewis.
"What is it this time?" Charlie asks with a fond smile.
"Fucking Sam keeps trying to hit on me and won't take a fucking hint! I've told her so many times that I'm not into dating! I'll live alone with my eight cats, thank you very much." Lewis declares passionately.
"Yesterday you texted me about how you want a datemate so you can snuggle in their arms" Terrence points out with a smirk.
"Who needs a datemate when I can assist you and force you or Charlie or Julia to snuggle with me any time I want?" Lewis points out without a laugh, a smile on his face.
"Gayy" Julia teases with a smile.
"Shut your heteroromantic ass up you fucking ace." Lewis teases, bumping Julia's shoulder as everyone at the table except for Charlie stands up to get into the lunch line.
"Like you have room to talk, my fellow asexual. Your interest in dating fluctuates more than Charlie's gender did back in eighth grade, before they knew they were nonbinary." Julia retorts with a smile, bumping Lewis' shoulder hard enough that he stumbles.
"I ship it" Lauren mutters to Terrence, who smiles at her with an agreeing nod.
A/N: Sorry about the wait! My muse has been fluctuating and my phone screen is still cracked. And when I say cracked, I mean spider web cracks across most of the screen and a couple small pieces of the screen are actually missing. Please bear with me!
