"You liar! You promised me it wasn't you! You promised me it was all a lie!"
"I did lie. I'm sorry Lyn."
"And that's all I get? A simple confession? No I didn't do it? I can explain? Nothing like that at all?"
"No."
Her violet eyes threatened to spill over with tears. So many emotions filled
them. Anger and Confusion all towards me. Sadness for betrayal, and Fear. Fear of knowing who I was.
"So, what?" A sniffle. Her hands covered her eyes. "I was used?"
"Yes."
Her tears spilled over and ran down her hands and face. A stifled sob. My gaze shifted downward to her neck. The Lightning-shaped scar that peered out over the neck line of her tunic. The scar I gave her from all those years ago. The Cursed Fate. Every child given that scar was Cursed. Isolated from Humanity for all their days. As the Legends said. They all differed but one thing was clear in their knowledge. The Lost Children of Light. Every 10 Cycles, 15 or more children would be orphaned and brought to the Light Country. 'Brainwashed' and made into Warriors of light.
The ages varied. From childbirth to the age of 12. In some cases, older were brought in. But few ever lived past their 15th Cycle-or year-of the Light's Way. My 15th's end was in about 2 hours. Because of that, I had been strapped to the Light Sphere and all my important memories were shown to all in the Clan. As a remembrance, or memento of me to all. Out of the 20 that left every Quarter Cycle. Only 5 would be Chosen to be Guardians. Those 20 were ones who had finished all Light Training would be stripped of their 15 Cycles and left in a world that had forgotten them, the 5 Chosen would become a permament Light Child. Those who left...It was unclear what would happen to them. I was about to find out. The last thing I had to do was fulfill the last Light Code. Make Peace with God and Man.
Why was Lyn crying? No Light Child had resistive emotions after the 3rd Light Cycle, yet she was in her 10th Cycle. Light Defects were very abnormal in 10th Cycles. I took a cautious step forward. Lyn noticed and hurriedly backed into the wall. Her arms spread wide as if to try to find the pressure system to back out of the room. "No!" I took another step. "You'd think that I'd still...I'd still...." I took the last step. She tried to slide left. I barred the way with my arm. "Ven! Stop! I'll call the Nav-!"
"You won't."
Defiance filled her eyes and she did a messy right. "Don't tell me that! I-!"
"I love you."
My words seemed to freeze her in her tracks. Lyn's hands clutched her heart. "Li...Liar."
"Not this Lyn. I wouldn't lie about this." I reached out with my free hand into the air between us. She didn't flinch away. "You killed my family. Almost everyone I knew."
"I did. Jadin stopped me."
"Then...why couldn't you kill me too?" She tentatively placed her right hand in mine. She was so cold. I could her tiny body tremble every couple seconds. Was she that scared of me? "You were too powerful. More so then those I killed before." A scoff. "You were Lyn. So strong. I thought you'd be an easy kill, if not an easy brainwashing. You just...kept getting back up. So many times after I struck you down."
"Liar. You're so much stronger than me." She was still pressed against the wall. As far as she could get away from me. But...she seemed to relax slightly, as if listening to my words helped. "I am? Maybe...but it takes alot of strength to get back up again, everytime a harder, bloodier fall than the last." Her eyes clouded. Most likely thinking back to that day. "I was shocked. An easy picking became a challenge. One I hadn't seen ever before."
"It didn't show that in the Sphere." She placed her left hand against my chest. At first I thought she would push me away. Instead, she made me step backwards a few paces so she could look up and see me better. Her eyes concentrating on my face. A old trick. She was checking to see if I was lying. I covered my eyes with my left hand. A reflex I had grown into. Not purposefully. Instinctively. It helped me to concentrate and speak clearer. "Not everything was shown. Just the main things."
"That doesn't change the fact that you could've killed me if you wanted."
"It doesn't. But by the time I was so fed up by you...Jadin and Talla came."
"I see. Then tha-."
"ALL LIGHT LEAVERS MUST COLLECT THEIR THINGS. ALL LIGHT LEAVERS MUST COLLECT THEIR THINGS. LEAVE ALL LIGHT INSTRUMENTS BEHIND. I REPEAT LEAVE ALL LIGHT INSTRUMENTS BEHIND. 1 HOUR AND 12 MINUTES TIL LIGHT CROSSING."
A growl escaped my throat. Lyn laughed a little. "Do you forgive me Lyn?" The laugh died. Her free hand reached up and started fussing with my unruly hair. A mindless instinct for her end. A calming gesture for both of us. She was stalling. Either way, I wanted an answer. I suddenly turned and started walking out of the Training Arena.
"Ven!!! Where are we going?"
"To my room."
"Why?"
"Cause I have to get ready. I'm leaving soon." She tried to break out of my grasp. I held tighter. She sighed and resigned to her fate. "Will you die?"
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"Are you one of the 15?" I didn't answer. She already knew. Lyn made a soft crying sound. "Aw...don't do that. You'll make me cry."
"I'll miss you."
She barely whispered the word, but I still heard it. "I'll miss you too."
"How do you know if you'll be able to remember even that?"
"Cause I know The Master wouldn't be too cruel to make me not remember you."
"Then are you at peace with God now?" There was a smile in her voice.
"Yes. But not with man." She cocked her head to the side. "What man?"
"You." Lyn made a face. "I won't forgive you. At least...if you can remember, and come back...if you can promise that then I will."
"You must promise the same thing too, then."
She looked up to me. "I promise. So come back soon."
"I promise."
