I watched reflection as my segments of my hair fell to the ground. It was the day of my 18th birthday. It was custom for both women and men to cut their after growing out it out from a certain age. The first time I cut my hair since now was when I about five, after my father disappeared from my life. I, of course, did not know any better and decided to let my anger out of my hair and a pair of scissors. When my mother saw the mess I made of my hair, she cried because she felt like I had chosen to mature at such a young age because of my father's absence. When I told her the real reason, she fixed my hair into a style that would fit my terrible attempt at a haircut and told me never to cut my hair until I was at the age of 18. Eighteen was the age of maturity within our city and long hair was a conception of youth, therefore it had to be cut. My mother carefully snipped around my eyes, leaving me the freedom to do whatever I would like to with my bangs. While I watched my hair fall, I saw a completely different woman than I did before. I looked just like my mother.
My mom backed away and let me look into my reflection, a teary eyed smile on her face. She must have remembered the first time that this happened to her.
"Adeleine, you look beautiful," she confessed.
I couldn't help but feel emotional. My youth was gone and I had just graduated from high school. It was my birthday tomorrow and I was not sure if my mother would be able to attend it. She was preparing for a trip outside of the city to work on a peace treaty with the outside cities. The citizens of the city called those cities Rebellion Cities, or Rebel Cities for short. There was a large amount of violence within these smaller cities. There were five around our capital of Diamandias. Flint was the most heard of one, that is where my step-father was from, Samas Flint. He is a direct decent of the founder of the once powerhouse of the province of Sliverstone, in which Flint was in conflict with Diamandis until recently when my mother married Samas as a treaty of peace.
"Do you want me to come with you, Mom?" I questioned as I brushed some loose hair away from my eyes.
She laid her hand on my shoulder and sighed. I could see her age catching up with her. Even though she was only in her 40s, she was already greying. On her ring finger laid a sliver wedding band with a rare stone not even those in the Sliverstone Province had, an amethyst stone. My mother told me that Samas's family had keep the band in his family for generations and was produced in a far off land, of which even present History classes do not teach.
"I would love for you to come with me Adeleine, as would I love your step-father to join as well, but its best that I go on this trip alone," she said cautiously, as if she was hiding a secret.
She took a few steps back and walked into the kitchen. I sat there and looked at my reflection. I had golden hair, the color of a ray of sun. Most children in Diamandis have brown or black hair, but it was rare to have blonde hair. Blonde hair was a sign of royalty in our society. My father had blonde hair. I haven't seen my father for thirteen years, ever since he disappeared from my life. The city likes to gossip about my family, especially since my family holds a majority of the power in the capital. I remember hearing stories that my father had found another woman in one of the Rebel Cities or that he was killed on the way to make a peace treaty with the Rebel City of Rust. My mother never told me the truth about my father's disappearance and had raised me for alone until she married my step-father.
I walked into the kitchen to see my step-father making breakfast, his glasses at the tip of his nose and a grin on his face and my mother hugged him around his waist. She was singing a show tune melody, of which I am guessing is from her childhood. My mother does not speak of her childhood to anyone, especially me. Although she was so secretive, she was very talented as well.
