“What do you mean she was assassinated?” I choked out, my tears falling down my face.
Adela’s face became almost emotionless. That face she made me cringe. She took her hands and laced her fingers together, putting her cupped hand in front of her on the desk. “Your mother was traveling from Diamandias to Flint on the main road. The main road is extremely dangerous to travel, especially at night. Your mother must have been driving close to midnight when she was attacked. We sent out a spy to check on her arrival because she was supposed to arrive last night and when they reached a wreckage in the middle of the road, they decided to investigate it for signs of survival. When the spy was surveying inside the car, they found your mother in the front seat. She had already passed when they reached her because her body was cold. The spy then was attacked by an unknown force, but they managed to escape. This morning, we sent another spy to go move your mother’s body from the wreckage, but when they arrived, your mother’s body was already missing. I am very sorry to say that we have no clue who assassinated your mother nor do we know where her body is,” she spoke to me, almost stone cold.
“How can you not know where my mom is?” I screamed at her, already tired from her coldness. I shook my head, trying to get the image of my mother’s wedding ring out of my head. I should have picked it up while I still could have, but one of her spies stopped me before I could do anything.
“We know how difficult this must be to hear, but it is not safe to travel outside of Flint for this time being for your safety. We have provided shelter for you while you stay here,” she responded.
I shook my head in disbelief. Adela pressed a button under her desk, in which the young girl that had once been in the room entered.
“Yes ma’am. What do you need me to do?” she questioned Adela.
“Willow, can you take Miss Adeleine to your house for the time being? She must be exhausted and she will need shelter. I know you can provide well for her. Make sure none of your roommates cause trouble for her,” she told the girl.
Willow nodded and held out a hand to me.
“Shall we go?” she asked me.
I grabbed her hand, trying not to show my face because it was stained in tears. As we walked, Adela shouted, “Oh, and Willow? Please tell Adeleine about our Weapons force. I’m sure her step-father’s gift will come in handy.”
How did she know about my step-father’s ring that he gave to me? Samas must have told her, but it was awfully strange that Samas never mentioned that I have an aunt. By the time I had thought of some possibilities, we had arrive at one of the neighborhoods that Adela had mentioned. The sign read “Warrior’s Quarter”. Willow punched in a keycode and the gates opened slowly. We walked past the gate while the gate closed behind us.
“I’m sorry to hear about your mother. I hope that you will like staying here for the time being. I know that it isn’t much like the place you call home, but it is nice enough for us citizens of Flint,” Willow said, trying to comfort me. I said nothing, my face going blank because I am trying to act more mature like I should be.
After a few blocks, we arrive at a small house. It was made of concrete with very few windows. The landscape imaged the surrounding land around the city, desert type. Willow knocked on the door.
“Hey T, open the door. I left my key in my room!” she shouted past the door.
Suddenly I could hear the lock turn and a tall male figure opened the door. He had strong shoulders and his hair was a mess, like he had been sleeping the whole morning.
“Hey Willie, what do you want?” he spoke to Willow as he rubbed his eyes. He looked around and stared at me, surprised by the sight of another person.
