I crashed into the heavy doors and threw myself through them; Tazmin was nowhere to be seen. Whipping out my phone, I punched in the words where are you??? and sent it to Summer. Unsure of where to go, I stood like an idiot in the doorway, with people pushing past me from every direction. Eventually I decided to make my way to the wall, tall, brick walls looming over me, and texted Summer again. It was T&S! Careful!!!
No reply. I could feel my heart leaping out of my chest, for I had this awful feeling that those two were about to do something ridiculous and irreversible: it was obvious they knew we were onto them. And that meant we were in grave danger.
I looked around: this was the lunch-time rush. Everyone was trying to either get to their forms or the canteen and it was total chaos. None of our group were in the crowds, and Saffron and Tazmin certainly weren't. I wondered where Summer was-is she in trouble? For that matter, are the others okay?
Suddenly, my phone vibrated. As quick as lightning, I yanked my phone back out of my pocket and checked it. But it wasn't Summer-it was Alex, asking where we were and why we weren't on the field. I checked the time. It was twenty-five to, and usually Summer and I get there at half past latest. Today I wasn't even sure we would turn up. And that could become permanent.
I quickly texted him back: no help it's T&S we're in trouble need to find Summer. As soon as it sent, another message came through, and this one thankfully was from Summer. I felt so relieved, or at least, until I read it.
Help!!! P.E toilets!!!
Without thinking, my feet began to move: one foot in front of another, pounding across the concrete which caused an echo to ripple up the old, brick buildings. As I took a sharp turn to avoid some sixth formers, I slipped on a patch of mud, much to the boys' amusement (-they began laughing and pointing at me, but I didn't stop to bother). Ignoring the sixth formers' help, I scrambled to my feet and continued to race around the corner of the building. A throbbing pain was radiating from my knee, which I assumed was bleeding from being scrapped along the stones next to the science block; I didn't check. I knew if I looked down, I'd certainly whack straight into a wall or a tree, because that's the sort of luck I have.
Another corner and I'll be there, I thought as I leaned to the left, then sprinted the last few metres and reached the door.
My grazed hand closed around the relaxingly cold handle and tried to open the door. But it wouldn't budge. I tried again, but it was locked, from the inside. No! I screamed internally. Summer's trapped inside there with Tazmin and Saffron, and I can't get to them! I threw my hands to my head in despair. Should I get the PE teachers? I wondered, before remembering: there's two doors to the girls' changing rooms, and one's via the toilets. I rushed round the building, getting several odd glances from other people, and burst through the doors to the PE department, which crashed into the pale wall with a bang. After sprinting past the PE office, I checked the gym, which was empty, and ran straight through it to the opposite double doors. Once again, I crashed through a door-this time to the changing rooms-yet another dark blue one, with a silvery door knob. Then I turned the corner...
However, as I grasped the door handle of the door that led to the toilets, I stopped, and silently backed away.
I got my phone out again: tonnes of messages from Alex were listed in my notifications. I swiped right and tapped in my passcode, before going to contacts and calling him. As I placed the speaker next to my ear, the ringing became louder. Please pick up soon, I begged as I stood with all my senses alert. He has to pick up, otherwise, what can I do? As I stood there, I could feel the liquid trickling down my leg, and it made me feel sick again. Suddenly, another message from Summer came through, and it made me start pacing up and down outside the toilets in anticipation and fear.
HELP!!!
What's going on in there? I wanted to know so desperately, yet my brain told me that marching in and hoping everything goes smoothly would no doubt go badly. Like a flash I replied hold on and pressed 'send'. But I had no service. Of course, of all times, it had to be now. I moved towards the window, hoping more than anything that Summer would receive it. I have to reassure her-and save her, of course. I don't want her to be afraid.
After what seemed like forever, Alex picked up and everyone began screaming down the other end of the phone. It sounded rather like a children's choir on their first practice, with everyone out of tune and with a different song.
"Christmas!" May's distinctive tone cried out. "Where's Summer?" I was forced to turn the volume of my phone down a lot.
"Shhh!" I demanded. "They know we're onto them! I'm by the PE toilets-Summer and the other two are inside. She's in danger-we all are. I'm going in, you lot listen over the phone, okay?" I heard some static whispering the other end of the line.
"Yep-we're with you," Alex confirmed. "But Christmas?"
"Yeah?" I replied, stepping towards the door; its dark blue paint chipping around the edges.
"Be careful-I don't want to loose you."
That brought a tear to my eye. "I'll try," I managed to choke out as it rolled down my cheek, leaving a watery path.
