Chapter 4
"What in the world are you thinking?" Jesse asked.
"I don't know yet but I guarantee it'll be good, and probably illegal." I say with a mischievous smile.
"What I cannot seem to process," Chris starts to say, "Is that Loner Lena is actually very outgoing, has a sense of humor and does not weigh like, four hundred pounds. I mean when you walk around at school you seem kind of chubby and very anti-social. But get you alone and your all spunk, dry humor and, well, your not chubby at all."
"Oh, come on, I bet she's not that bad." Jesse says in an optimistic tone, clearly amused by Chris' little speech.
"Oh, I was trust me. I was an anti-social bitch who people picked on. But now that I've experienced some not very pleasant events, I am going to reinvent myself and become a better person."
We all look at each other, and burst out laughing. "Oh man, that was good." Chris says between fits of hysterical laughter.
"So, what did I miss?" Amber says as she enters the room.
"Nothing but the best speech known to man," Chris says still laughing. "Definitely some serious Dr. Pill shit."
"Okay, what does that- never mind. Jesse, your Cabs here." Amber says sitting down on the couch next to me.
"Oh." Jesse says reluctantly, "well, I guess I'll go now." He turns to me and stretches out his hand, "Nice meeting you, it was kind of bad circumstances but it was still a pleasure."
I look up at his face and give him a weak smile. "Nice to meet you to." I say as I shook his hand goodbye.
He hugged Amber and shook Chris' hand before walking out the door. I was watching him leave when Amber turned to me and said, " Do you want me to show you where the guest bedroom is?"
"Sure," I was saying as my stomach growled. Oops. Forgot about dinner.
Chris laughed and said, "I think we better feed her first."
I was a little embarrassed but I followed them to the kitchen where Amber said I could have leftovers for dinner.
Amber got out two plastic containers, one had something white in it and the other had some kind of meat in it. "What is it?" I asked.
"Mashed potatoes and meatloaf." Amber said pulling the lids of.
"Oh. I was expecting something more elaborate and pricey like caviar. That's what rich people eat, right?"
Amber smiled. "I don't know, I never hang out with rich people who are snobs and like caviar. I don't even know what caviar is."
"Fish eggs." Chris says. "Really nasty. Trust me your not missing much, taste like road kill."
Yeah, that's just what I want think about as I make a plate of food. Road kill and fish eggs. Yummy.
After Amber heated up the leftovers I ate, I had to admit, even thought it wasn't all that fancy, it was still the best meal I've had in a long time.
"Alright, well, I'm going to bed." Chris says walking out of the room.
"'Night." Amber calls after him.
We sit there together while I eat and she talks about how cool it will be that I can stay here. She babbles on, but I'm not really listening anymore. I'm concocting a plan to secretly get back at my step dad.
