The way she felt about her. Every love filled moment when she winked and gave her that smile with a flick of the mouth whilst sinking into the old dusty sofa. It was like a dream, but it was her reality. She leant into her, mouth nuzzled into her cheek as she felt her soft silky kiss on her head. "I love you," she said to her girlfriend for the first time, "I love you too." The other girl replied for the first time also. They kissed and as their lips touched each other, all that was in that room that night was pure love. She was her girlfriend and she wouldn't change anything else about her life for the world. Except for one thing.

Lily was in her first year of sixth form, same school she'd been at for nearly six years so she had know most of her friends for years. As she pulled her chair out to stand up and get a pen, she could feel a foot blocking her way. She looked over to see the cheeky smile of her girlfriend Kara, her cheeks were glowing with mischief as she slowly withdrew her feet allowing Lily to pass through and retrieve her pen. Lily walked to the teachers desk and back, feeling the shivers roll around her body like a speeding ball not wanting to stop. As she went back into her chair, brushing her arm past Kara in the process, they both looked at each other with nervous smiles on their faces. Tonight was the night.

Lily and Kara walked home hand in hand talking about everything except for the one topic they knew was going to change their lives after tonight. They had planned to meet both their parents in the coffee shop a few blocks away from their school. This wasn't unusual seeing as their parents were very good friends. Lily and Kara once even spent Christmas Day together one year. The sun was shining almost too brightly but Kara could feel small drops of rain on her cheek just as the two girls stepped inside. Their parents were already there when they got in and were beckoned over immediately and through the sips of coffee and the spilt crumbs of cake Lily didn't want this moment to end as she knew that this was going to be hard.

"So you're probably wondering why we brought you here." Kara stated, looking at Lily with a reassuring smile on her face. Kara was nervous too but thought that her parents would be understanding, however, Lily felt differently, she didn't know how her parents were going to react but here goes nothing. "We're gay and were dating," Lily whispered.

There was an awkward silence but Lily's parents spoke up first. "We know," her mum smiled, "we've known for months now and we don't mind you just keep on being you." Lily beamed, she felt on top of the world, this was better then she could ever have hoped for. Kara's dad opened his mouth then suddenly closed it and walked out, his coffee mug the only remnants of him being there. "Charlie!" Kara's mum shouted after him in a helpless voice. Kara burst into tears, it was one of two times Lily had seen her cry to this extent - the first time when she found out her grandma died. Kara's mum held her, people were starting to stare so they shuffled out in an uncomfortable silence. They all walked to Lily's house, as they got to the door Kara's mum tried to leave but Lily's parents wouldn't let them. "Don't do this alone," Lily's mum whispered in her ear. They all walked in, the familiar hallway feeling different as Lily walked through it - kicking off her boots in the process. As the parents poured out some wine and murmured to each other the two girls were shooed out the room and they went up to Lily's room, her Hayley Kiyoko and Halsey posters staring down at them. They intertwined their legs, rocking them back and forth against the bed frame and Lily put on some slow, romantic music. She knew that it may be a long time before Kara will be able to come round to her house after tonight and she wanted to take her mind off everything that just happened. Kara leaned into to give her a kiss, now that first kiss may have just been a kiss, but to them, it symbolised so much more than that.

A couple of hours later Kara and her mum left the house, her mum not drunk but a little tipsy. They walked home, seeing as Kara's dad had driven off earlier. It was early evening, it was still light but there was a slight chill in the air as the mother and daughter walked along the pavement, arms linked. They walked in silence with the odd joke or comment here and there when suddenly out of the blue her mum turned to her and reassured her: "I'm fine with it sweetie, I never got to tell you, what with your father, but I'm happy and wouldn't ask anything more of you. I'm proud of you Kara." She stopped and hugged her daughter just as they had got to the path leading to the front door, squeezing as if she couldn't never let go. After a minute Kara's mum wiped the tear from her eyes and they walked up to the door. They stopped, the door had opened and there was her father, a suitcase in his hand.
