Scott stood outside the door, contemplating whether or not to knock. He turned and sat on the steps of the porch and looked out into the yard. The light autumn breeze blew the colorful leaves, causing them to skip across the bright green grass. Scott looked down at his phone, which had started vibrating.
"Hello?"
"Scott! Are you there yet?" Avi's low voice boomed.
Scott sighed, "Yes."
"Have you talked to her yet?"
"Um, actually, I'm sitting outside her house. I haven't actually gone in yet."
"Scott!" Avi yelled in exasperation. "Look, they're boarding my flight now and I'll be back soon, but please, please just go talk to her." Scott could hear the crowd of people surrounding Avi, pushing to get on the plane first.
Still wishing that Avi didn't ask him, he answered 'yes' and quickly hung up, avoiding any other tasks Avi wanted him to do.
Scott stood up and walked towards the door. He hated Avi for this. Avi was traveling with Ryan, and was in some other country. If he was home, Scott wouldn't have to do this.
He rang the doorbell, and silently hoped she wasn't home.
The door slowly creaked open, revealing Esther, puffy eyed and still crying.
"What do you want, Scott?" she whispered.
"I came to check on you, Es," he responded, stepping uninvited, into her house.
"No.. No Scott. Please?" Esther tried to push him out, but her energy was all spent on crying. She eventually gave up and accepted that he was staying.
"Oh, Esther," he whispered as he wrapped his arms around her. The moment he touched her, the tears poured out as they could no longer be held back. "I know," Scott whispered. "I know it's hard."
"But- but-" Esther sobbed.
Scott cut her off and simply held her, until she could compose herself.
"Why are you here?" she questioned.
"I'm worried about you," Scott smiled at Esther and in return, got a raised eyebrow.
"Don't lie to me, Scott," Esther scolded, the tears still escaping the corners of her eyes. "You'd be out partying. It's a saturday night and you're here with me. I know you better than that."
Scott sighed and responded, "Okay, yes. Avi told me to come check on you." Esther rolled her eyes and pushed Scott out of her way. She ran up the stairs and into her bedroom.
Esther knew Scott was on his way up, and locked the door. She leaned on the door and slid down, and was now sitting on the floor. She pulled her knees up to her chest and the tears started flooding.
Why is this happening to me? She wondered.
"Es?" Scott faced the closed door and started to knock.
"No, Scott," she whispered.
"Oh, Esther, please open up," His forehead was pressed tightly to Esther's bedroom door. "Please?"
"No... No," Esther responded. "Scott, just go home."
"Esther...." Scott whispered one last time, and then he heard the door knob jiggle. He carefully and slowly opened the door and tip toed in.
Esther had made her way to her bed and had thrown her covers over her body. "Oh Es," Scott sat at the edge of her bed. He stroked her hair and started to comfort her. "Es... I know. I know it hurts now. But baby, you deserve better than him. Darien wasn't worth is. He is not worth these tears. Esther? Look at me. You are so beautiful and talented. So many people love you."
She slowly sat up and Scott wrapped his arms around her. "I love you," Scott whispered as he kissed her forehead.
"Scott...?" Esther stared at the tall blonde, surprised. He simply smiled back and nooded.
"I love you."
