- Evelyn -
You could see the stars from the open window on the fifth floor of the castle grounds. They shimmered in the air, lighting the moonless sky. Evelyn sighed as she lovingly stared at the stars. Many thoughts came to mind as she watched them shine. Could they lead her on an adventure as exciting as her ancestors stories? Would she meet the monsters of legend and the princes of myth? Reaching into the sky, she felt the cold air brush the small hairs on her hands. She shivered, spinning so her mahogany hair twirled.
"Imagine that!" She announced to the rows of dolls sitting before the large bed, too big for a child her age. "We could see the trees! Maybe even meet the monsters."
One of the small soft toys fell to the side, it's head landing on the ground. Evelyn giggled, her hands covering her mouth. She nodded.
"Yes that is right Sir Peaches. We must not enter the forest without a sword! We have to be able to protect ourselves." Evelyn put her hands on her hips, her white night gown ruffling as wind past.
Turning her head, she spun past the window to the large wooden door. Before she could think of doubting herself, she nodded. Rushing toward the door, her pale palm grasped the cold metal handle. Pulling the door open just a bit, she raced forward into the hall. Evelyn did not think of closing the door behind her, so there was no doubt the maid would come find her when she arrived to help the princess wake.
So Evelyn crept around corners, being careful to stand away from the careful eyes of the palace guards. But there was no arguing against the fact that they had seen the young Princess. None questioned her though, she was different no doubt. But she would change, they all thought that.
Looking around the corner, Evelyn rested her chin on the stone pillar as she looked down the hall. The wooden door gleamed at the end of the hall, seeming more beautiful than the rest. But it was plainer than the doors to the maids quarters. But to Evelyn, the door to the armoury looked like the doorway to heaven.
Giggling under her breath, she raced forward. Her footsteps were light as she skipped toward the room. When she reached the door, she looked up at the handle and stopped. A breath left her lips, quiet and steady. Her hand reached to push the door open and as it did, the room was revealed to her.
Evelyn had never been allowed in the room at the end of the hall. It was for the King and Knights only. But, she was not one to follow the rules. She was one to make them. Taking a step forward, her eyes settled on a blade that she'd never seen before. One so perfect, it looked as though it would shatter the other blades in a single slice. Evelyn's mouth fell open and she raced toward the blade.
Pulling the katana off the wall was the worst of it all. It was heavy for the young Princess, and sat awkwardly in her hands. Her fingers could not properly grasp the hilt, and the blade stood taller than her body. She would have to grow into the blade, for there were no smaller versions of it in the room. The reason for that, was obvious.
Her blue eyes shone as she spun to the door, the blade being dragged behind her. There was no mistaking the noise of metal against stone. Just as there was no stopping the Princess on her adventure to steal the blade. Evelyn grinned as she stepped forward, wondering how she'd reach her quarters from the armoury without being noticed.
But that first step sealed her fate. As she stepped forward into the dim light under the stars, her eyes brightened. She wanted to see beyond the forests. Beyond the mountains and beyond what lay behind them. She wanted to see the world for itself. Evelyn wished herself an adventure like no other. Stepping forward with the blade in hand, she dreamt of a golden world forming around her. As she stumbled forward, she raced. Shooting arrows from imaginary bows and defeating the evil she believed existed.
The bedroom door opened and she grinned at the toys sitting before the bed. Holding the katana up as best she could, she grinned.
"We have ourselves a sword." Evelyn exclaimed to the sleeping crowd. "We may have ourselves an adventure!"
