Chapter Three - Shock after Shock

"Eomma?!"

My heart stilled in my chest all of a sudden as the crying voice of my little two and a half-year-old son reached my ears.

"Eomma!" He wailed distressedly into the phone again when I didn't immediately reply.

Getting my bearings together I quickly responded to his cries for me. "Oh baby what's wrong? Why are you crying TaeMin-ah?"

"E-Eomma! MiNa said that you weren't coming back home! I got so scared Eomma! I don't want you to leave me Eomma!" He sobbed into my ear. "Even J-JiHun said that you weren't coming back home!"

My heart clenched as my little boy sobbed into the phone to me. "Oh baby, Eomma's just gone out for work my love. I'll be back with my handsome little TaeMin-ah soon okay and tell you what I'll even treat you to ice cream when I come back home okay?"

He sniffled. "Promise Eomma?"

"Eomma promises baby, so stop crying now okay. I'll be home soon TaeMin-ah. I love you my little Banana."

"Come home soon Eomma, I don't like it when you're far away."

My breath caught in my throat at his confession and with great difficulty, I kept my tears at bay steadily replying to him. "I will baby, I'll be home with you soon. I love you TaeMin-ah."

"Love you too Eomma." He must've been shuffling around handing the phone back to my mother because seconds later her apologetic voice came through the phone.

"Sorry about that JangMi-ah, but the little one was crying so much I thought it would be best for him to hear your voice himself so he could be reassured."

"Yah Eomma it's okay, don't apologise. I'm glad I got to speak to him, I was missing my babies."

"You okay sweetheart? You seem a little jittery."

I laughed softly, voice a little breathy and shaky. "How do you still know how I feel, even when I'm sat so far away from you Eomma?"

My mother chuckled. "You may have babies of your own now, but you'll still always be my baby JangMi-ah. You're my precious little girl and I'll always know how you are my love, no matter the distance between us."

"I love you Eomma." I whispered into the phone, cradling the device protectively to my face.

"I love you too honey." She stayed silent for a bit before speaking up again. "The neighbor's little boy and girl are over here right now and they said something to MiNa-ah about her Appa and that's what set the poor darling off."

I gasped at that, my heart tightening in my chest for my beautiful little baby girl. She was very sensitive to the topic of her Appa and even though she was still very young she felt the absence of her father a lot more than her brothers did.

"What did they say to her Eomma?" I whispered choking back my tears.

"Honey... they're both still kids after all, but you know how mean little ones can unintentionally be sometimes."

I sucked in a deep breath. "Eomma please... just tell me what they said to MiNa-ah."

"... The little girl said she was sure that you would also leave them because they have no Appa." My mother sighed. "That's all I heard when I walked in the room before MiNa-ah ran off angrily to your room."

"Oh, my poor baby!" My voice shook with tears and I tried really hard to stop them from coming out because I knew if anyone saw me crying it would create a very big drama for me.
