Louis’s POV
As Paige left the room, I couldn’t stop thinking about her. I love how her long, dark brown hair cascaded down her back. How her bright blue eyes lit up when she smiled. How she always had a witty comeback that left me tongue-tied. There was something intriguing about this mysterious girl, and it made me want to get to know her better. I was so caught-up in thought that I didn’t realize Paige had already finished her audition. I went to go catch up to her when I saw the expression on her face. Her eyes didn’t seem to glow as they had before, and her beaming personality seemed to fade. I knew right away that something was wrong.
“Hey, how’d it go?” I asked with little hope.
Paige looked down at the ground, avoiding my glance. Even though I had just met this girl, it was killing me to see her hurt like this. I instinctively pulled her into my arms and rested my head on her shoulders. We stood there in each other’s arms until she finally pulled away.
“Not well, but thank you.” Paige croaked.
“I’m sorry, do you wanna talk about it?”
“Sure. Well... Umm... I began to sing my song, and it started off well. As I went on, the nerves got to me. The lyrics became jumbled in my head, and I froze. I didn’t know what to do, so I sprinted off stage.” As she finished speaking, tears began to roll down her cheeks.
I gave her a sympathetic look as an idea popped into my head.
“Can you sing me the song?”
I seemed to have caught her off-guard. Paige paused for a moment, and hesitantly began to sing.
“What day is it? And in what month?
This clock never seemed so alive
I can't keep up and I can't back down
I've been losing so much time
Cause it's you and me and all of the people with nothing to do
Nothing to lose
And it's you and me and all other people
And I don't know why, I can't keep my eyes off of you”
As Paige sang ‘You and Me’ by Lifehouse, I couldn’t help but get lost in the music. Who knew an amazing girl like Paige could have such a beautiful voice. I got butterflies in my stomach listening to her sing. How could the judges pass-up such an amazing gift? I hadn’t realized Paige had ended the song until she asked for my opinion.
“So, what do you think?” she questioned.
I was speechless, struggling to find words to describe her talent. “Paige, you have the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard, they have to give you a second chance!” I probably sounded a bit too enthusiastic, but I knew the judges had to hear her voice.
“It’s too late now, Lou! This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance, and I blew it! They aren’t gonna give any second chances.”
“Come on! You have to give it another shot!”
Paige weighed out her options, and eventually gave in. We headed over to the stage, when we were stopped by security.
“Where do u think you two are going?” a stocky security guard asked in a low, husky voice.
She turned to me, ignoring the security guard.
“I’m giving up and leaving. It is what it is. Good luck with your audition.” Paige whispered with sadness in her voice.
“No! I’m not giving up on you, Paige, you can’t leave here without a fair chance.” I pleaded to her.
The security guard spoke up, “You too need to leave now.”
Just then, I heard my number being called. I knew I wasn’t going to leave until Paige got a second chance.
“Louis, you have to go! Otherwise they’ll skip your audition. Forget about what happened to me, you’re gonna do great.” Paige exclaimed.
As much as I didn’t want to leave her, I knew she wanted me to go. I grabbed her hand. The butterflies picked up in my stomach again, as I slid my hand into hers. Paige knew I was trying to pull her onto stage with me. At first she protested, but eventually gave in.
The judges were shocked when they saw that I had brought her with me. I begged the judges to give Paige a second chance, but they quickly refused. Finally, Paige spoke up:
“Louis, they’re right I don’t deserve this,” she then turned to speak to the judges, “I’m sorry for the trouble I’ve caused, I’ll be on my way.”
“I’m sorry, Paige, I tried. Please wait for me backstage, I need to talk to you.” I pleaded.
Although I didn’t have anything specific to say, I couldn’t let a girl like her fall out of my grasp. She nodded and walked off stage.
Paige was all I could think about as I began my song.
