This is the bonus chapter I've created for The Half Breed Bandit getting 500 reads. Thank you so much for the support!
Cold. Frigid is the better word, I believe. Of all the places I've been in all three of the worlds, this is by far the most depressing. The ice is thicker than anything my demon energy could conjure up and the ice apparitions here I can sense have hearts just as frozen as this tundra wasteland.
A sigh escaped my brother's lips and I turned to see what emotion I could catch from his face before it disappeared.
Despair, grief and longing were in his blood red eyes before his normal, indifferent facade took over.
"See? There is nothing here that could possibly garner the attention of an outsider. There is no happiness, no wealth, no love for anyone, but themselves. Let's just go. It was pointless coming. I don't even know what you expected to see. I haven't visited this place in so long that I've almost forgotten it existed."
He turned around as if to leave, but I knew it was an act. He just didn't want me to catch any other emotions he was feeling. Hiei is nothing if not consistent with his brave faces.
I wanted to pay my respects to her though. It was me who asked the way to the realm of the ice apparitions. It was his choice to accompany me, against my better judgement.
I knew it was going to bother him being back. I also knew there was no way he was going to let me go alone though. My over protective younger brother.
Turning back to the floating ice rock, I zoned in on the best spot to land and leapt as hard as I could. I ended up landing on a slippery outcrop, just below the main platform. A slight sound of boots hitting ice alerted me that Hiei once again followed me, despite the inner turmoil this was causing him.
As we trudged along to Hina's grave, we remained silent. I could sense he was fighting to block me out of his head, but I was not going to pry. I've learned by now that he will talk when he's ready.
The only sound other than our footsteps was the wind sweeping across the frozen land. The ice apparitions stayed inside their houses without even a whisper. Every now and then a curious child would poke her head out a doorway to look at us, before an anxious mother ushered her back inside. Hiei gave no sign of acknowledgment to anything as we passed through the silent village. Odd that we were trespassing on their domain and not once did we meet anyone or anything to try to hinder us on our journey.
A rock formation on the edge of the island marked wher she lay. Hiei stood silently in front of it for a moment, then backed up so I could step forward. There was no indication this was even a tomb.
No kind words were engraved in the icy rock. Nothing. That made me angry.
These women were the reason my family was split apart. They were the reason Hina was dead to begin with. They could have at least given her a proper burial. The words in my head to ask Hiei for his permission almost left my tongue before he echoed inside my mind, "Go ahead."
My demon energy flowed into the frozen ground, making it shake. The rocks transformed into a headstone and the rubble beneath it encased the remains that I sensed within. The earth thawed and amidst the soil, grass and daisies sprouted, making her tomb in this frostbitten island the most beautiful place of all.
I took a step back admiring my work, seeing if anything was lacking. I curved the headstone a little more before writing with my pointer finger, "Here lies Hina, who was the picture of beauty and grace. She is survived by her son and daughter. She will always be missed."
"The flowers, they are eternally in bloom?" He stepped up beside me. Without turning to acknowledge him I nodded.
He laughed out loud, which surprised me. "Took a page out of kurama's book, did you? Everyday that passes you are becoming more like him."
I smacked him on the arm and laughed along with him to hide my embarrassment. It's true. I asked Kurama to teach me how to immortalize plants just for the occasion.
After about a half hour of standing there silently by the newly formed grave, I finally looked at him. "We can stay as long as you like, however long it takes. We can sit here as long as you please. We could also isolate this place so that no one would ever find it again. They would all just cease to exist." I gauged his reaction before continuing, "We could go live in a volcano if that would make you happy."
That made him smile, "Yes. I'm sure kurama would appreciate me for that one, taking you away from him to come stay with me inside a volcano. No, it's fine. Their hearts are as cold as this place and their eventual destruction has been seen because of their way of life. You protecting her grave so their idiocy doesn't destroy it is enough for me."
Suppressing the urge to hug him, I playfully nudged him on the shoulder. I held out my hand, palm up, in front of him. "If you want your mother's Hiruseki Stone, I can help you with that as well. I have seen it personally so therefore I can make it appear."
He pondered on it for a few moments all while gazing longingly at her tomb. "No. I believe it is where it should be, away from those wenches and prying eyes, protected by your power. All is as it should be right now. Let's go home."
