Today at school Hannah and I decided we were going to have a play date! When my parents dropped me off they talked to Hannah's mom and she's coming over at 4 today. I'm so excited to have a friend over, I already have everything planned. First, we're going to play outside, then board games, snacks and maybe some TV. When I told Mom my plan she said I should've waited to see what Hannah thought. I'm sure she won't mind. I'm the one inviting her to my house so I should get to pick what we do.
I sit on the couch for about ten minute watching out the window to the driveway. I begin to worry that she didn't want to come after all when the car finally pulls up. I jump off the couch then run to the front door. I wait by the door then hear a knock. I open it right away with no hesitation, I'm too excited to wait any longer.
When I see them I practically scream at them. "Hey Hannah!" I calm myself just a little and turn to her mom. "And hi Hannah's mom."
Hannah's mom laughs a little. "Well it's nice to meet you Lilly."
"Thanks, you too."
Her mom looks a lot like her, I can tell where the genes come from. Hannah and her mom both have green eyes and blonde hair as well as similar facial features. There are some differences though, like the way they wear their hair. Hannah has long, wavy hair while her mom keeps hers shorter and straight. The brown in her roots also make it apparent that her mom's blonde isn't natural like hers. Perhaps the genes last as a child but then later begin to turn brown as many peoples' hair ends up doing.
My mom then comes to my side. "Hey, nice to see you. I'm so glad we could get our girls together for a play date."
Her mom responds. "Me too, Hannah is just so shy I'm glad she's found a friend."
She has a very calm and soothing voice, making me feel at ease. I'm glad she's nice in case I ever go over Hannah's house one day, I don't know when I'll be ready for that. I don't even go to my relative's houses without my parents. They've tried leaving me with babysitters but it has always ended in disaster when my nerves get the best of me. It is near impossible for me to trust any stranger to be alone with me, what if something bad happens?
"Lilly too, she has such a hard time meeting people. She's always been quite anxious" Mom informs her.
I'm slightly embarrassed as she mentions my frequent anxiety. People seem to treat me differently when they figure it out. It's not like I'll freak out if you put the wrong topping on my ice cream, I'm not a ticking time bomb. I'm only nervous because anything can happen at anytime, caution is key.
Her eyes widen with surprise. "Wow really, she seems so energetic and excited."
Mom giggles. "Yeah, she's just very excited for this play date." She explains.
They say their goodbyes as Hannah's mom leaves. Mom closes the door and smiles at Hannah and me. We look at her knowing the 'motherly interrogation of new friends' is coming. Mom does this every time I meet a new friend at the park, often times resulting in them never wanting to come over my house.
"Hey Hannah." She says looking at her with a huge grin.
She isn't doing this right at all. Yes, Hannah is a new person and yes, this is my first play date ever, but this much attention will scare Hannah. What if Hannah never wants to come over again because Mom didn't know how to act?
"Hi Mrs. Fraye." Hannah answers.
"Oh, you can call me Sky." She tells Hannah, patting her on the back.
