"She's a child, Amos," the urgent whisper travelled through the kitchen door and into Lilith's ears. "We can't tell her the truth. Not yet."

"Then when, Marie? She's going to Hogwarts in a month. Is Lilith meant to go without knowing the truth about herself?" Amos' voice was laced with a mixture of sympathy and anger. Lilith stayed stone still, straining to hear their conversation through the door. She did not understand why they were talking about her. What truth? What weren't they telling her?

A long sigh escaped the woman. "It's just... she's so young. So innocent. To tell her the truth... we would be stealing that innocence from her," Marie sniffed.

"This has gone on for too long. It has been a decade, Marie. I know you love her, but she deserves to know this. If you won't tell her, I will," Amos said with a note of finality, almost daring his wife to challenge his intended deeds.

A silence stretched on for what felt like a Millenia before Marie spoke. "Okay," she said quietly. "Fine, but you're doing it alone. You'll see. You'll see that all you did was destroy her. I will not take part in shredding our Lilith of her childhood."

Lilith did not move. Her blood ran cold in her veins, head pounding with unanswered questions, hands shaking with something between fury and confusion.

And a voice in the back of her head, telling her that Marie was right. Whatever they weren't telling her, it would destroy her if she they did.
