I'm writing this on the floor of my basement with bombs raining mercilessly down on us outside. I fear for my own life as well as my family and everyone else in this country. When they overrun us and take us down, which in due time they certainly will, we don't know if they'll let us live or slaughter us with the rest of our people. That is why I am spending the last few hours, or possibly minutes, I have writing this.
To any future Esdelite who may come upon this and read it, you must now that we did not go down without a fight. Our men gave everything, sacrificed everything we had, and fought with every drop of strength we possessed to keep our precious country of Esdel out of the hands of these monsters. Thousands of us were killed, hundreds of our women and children were captured and murdered before our eyes to try and force us to surrender.
I assure you, we did not give up, but at the end they were simply too many. There was nothing more we could do. All we have left to do now is mourn over those we've lost, plead for the lives of those still with us, and hope.... hope that the Damerels will have mercy and at least not destroy our jewel, Esdel, completely.
This might be the end of our journey, the end of our fight for freedom and justice, but it is not the end for you. Wherever you may find yourself when reading this or whatever your situation may be, I urge you future Esdelites, do not stop fighting. Do not stop believing. Do not lose hope.
You have to stand up for Esdel. You have to stand up and fight back. Fight and take back what the Damerels so brutally took away from us. They will punish you, torture you, and make you believe in their fake illusion that they have unlimited power, but they don't. That's a lie. They only have the amount of power that they can make you believe they have.
My dear Esdelites, they might have won this time, but that does not mean they have won forever. There is still a chance for things to change for the better, you just have to grasp the opportunity when it comes.

Author's note:
If you're reading this, congratulations, you're one of the very few people who actually read the prologue of a book. But I promise you though, your time was not wasted as this little piece might just happen to be of significant importance further in the story. Anyway, now that we've set the background, the actual fun can begin! Please feel free to leave any feedback in the comments as I'm open for every opportunity to improve my writing. Enjoy!
