Haymitch's Story: The Hunger Games

Chapter 1- The Reaping

I stand amongst the people of District 12, anxiously; for I am dying to know what this year's Quarter Quell has in store.

My name is Haymitch. I'm 16. This means my name is in the drawing 4 times. But that number could mean the matter of life or death. Here comes Abby Trinket, the one who draws out the names. She is wearing a huge, green wig like 3 feet tall and a big dress to go with it. I heard that she has a 13 year-old daughter, Effie, who is living like a princess at the Capitol, while everyone here is starving. But my thoughts are cut off by the sound of the Anthem. After that, Abby starts to talk.

" Welcome all to the 50th Annual Hunger Games. This is a very special year because this... is the second Quarter Quell! " She is handed a note. This note decides what this year's Quarter Quell is. "This year, instead of 24 tributes competing in the games, there is going to be 48." People gasp and start to murmur. "So instead of the usual 2 tributes per district, now there's 4!"

"Now, to choose the tributes." My heart is pounding." First, the girls." She reaches inside a big bowl and pulls out a slip. " The first girl is... Natalie Peters" Everyone looks over to the frail 12 year-old. She slowly starts coming foreword. Once on stage she is congratulated. Congratulated!? Abby is congratulating a helpless little girl for being put to her own death. "Now, the second girl."

She reaches in again and grabs a second slip. " Kylie Thompson." A girl who looks about the same age as me begins walking to the stage. "It's very lovely to meet you," says Abby. "I hate you," Kylie says though gritted teeth. "And now for the boys," she says, ignoring Kylie. My heart is beating faster than ever before as she grabs a slip from the bowl. " Christopher Williams." .A huge, burly man steps foreword. He is definitely 18. Well he will get a lot of sponsors I think to myself.

" And now, last but not least, the final boy." My heart is pounding again as she reaches her pale hand into the bowl. She ever so slowly pulls out a slip. "Haymitch Abernathy."
